Furman?s Jay Jackson Earns Second Promotion in a Month

GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Former Furman pitcher Jay Jackson has earned his second minor league promotion in just over month, it was announced last week.

Jackson, a ninth round draft selection of the Chicago Cubs in June, has been promoted from the Chicago Cubs’ low Single A affiliate Peoria Chiefs of the Midwest League to the high Single A Daytona Cubs of the Florida State League.  He began his professional career at Boise, the Cubs’ Northwest League rookie club before earning a quick promotion to Peoria in early July.

Jackson’s promotion follows solid work at Peoria, where in six appearances, including one start, he posted a 2-2 record and 3.00 earned run average.  In 24 innings with the Chiefs, he allowed 22 hits and eight runs while notching 37 strikeouts and issuing only five walks.  Opponents hit .253 against him.

Counting his brief stint at Boise, he had compiled a 2-2 record as a professional with a 3.55 ERA, including 51 strikeouts and just six walks over 33.0 innings.

A first team All-Southern Conference selection for Furman in 2008, he posted a 9-2 record with a 3.17 earned run average in helping lead the Paladins to a 33-24 overall record and 17-10 third place league finish. The Taylors, S.C, product also earned 40 starts in the field, primarily in the outfield, and batted .336 with eight home runs and team leading 41 RBI this past spring.

With Jackson’s promotion, Furman now has two standouts playing in the Florida State League. Jackson’s former teammate, right-handed starting pitcher Matt Klinker `06, is with the Sarasota Reds after earning a call-up from Dayton of the Midwest League last week.
