Defensive Lineman Larry Beard |
Raja Andrews, Sr., Wide Receiver
Andrews was the Eagles’ leading receiver last season, and he looks to have an expanded role in the offense in GSU’s second year under head coach Chris Hatcher. Andrews is also a dangerous kick returner, returning a punt for a touchdown in ’07.
Larry Beard, Sr., Defensive End
A consensus first-team all-SoCon selection in 2007, Beard recorded five tackles for loss and four sacks while also recovering three fumbles.
Preview:
In Chris Hatcher’s first season in Statesboro, the Eagles were inches away from sharing the SoCon championship as a game-winning field goal attempt in the conference finale against Furman missed by the smallest of margins.
Payton Award-winning quarterback Jayson Foster graduated, leaving a group of QBs ready to battle for the starting spot. In addition, the Eagles lost each of their top three rushers from 2007, including Foster, Lamar Lewis and Mike Hamilton.
While GSU will look to replace Foster and seven other offensive starters, its strength in 2008 may be in its defense which returns nine of 11 starters from a year ago. In addition to defensive end Larry Beard, all-conference seniors Damon Suggs (DL) and Chris Covington (DB) will provide leadership for a unit that had the highest turnover margin in 2007 (+12) and allowed the second-fewest number of first downs (229).
After opening the season at in-state rival Georgia, the Eagles host four-straight home contests during the month of September. GSU will be featured on SportSouth twice in 2008, including an Oct. 18 home game against Appalachian State and season-ending showdown at rival Furman on Nov. 15.
