Charleston, S.C. - College of Charleston head women's soccer coach Kevin Dempsey has hired Mike Barroqueiro and Amy Switzer as assistant coaches, it was announced this week.
Barroqueiro comes to Charleston after having served as assistant coach/recruiting coordinator with Rutgers University since 2007. At Rutgers, he assisted in all facets of the program from developing and overseeing practice sessions to aiding in budget assessments as well as recruiting. He also organized recruiting trips, official and unofficial visits. He developed and implemented goalkeeping training for the nationally recognized goalkeeper Erin Guthrie.
"I'm really excited to have Mike joining our program," said Coach Dempsey. "He is one of the bright young coaches in the country and his passion and commitment to coaching is very evident after spending a few minutes with him. He's going to have a great impact on the players both on and off of the field."
A 2005 graduate of Rutgers, Barroqueiro served as head coach of the women's soccer club team from 2003-06 and led the team to a regional runner-up finish in 2004 and 2005, as well as a regional semifinal appearance in 2003. From 2003 - 2006 Barroqueiro was Director of Women's Soccer Operations for the Scarlett Knights, as well.
"I'm very excited and appreciative of the opportunity I've been given at the College of Charleston," said Barroqueiro. "I'm looking forward to working with both Coach Dempsey as well as the players in our quest to capture a Southern Conference Championship."
Since April Barroqueiro has been an assistant with the New Jersey Wildcats, a W-League franchise women's soccer team comprised of the highest caliber college and professional players from across the world.
Switzer spent last season as a graduate assistant at Ohio University, where she handled much of the recruiting correspondence, as well as travel arrangements and player development.
"I'm thrilled to have Amy joining our staff," said Coach Dempsey. "She has a very bright future ahead of her in coaching and we're all glad Amy will be with us at the College of Charleston. She did a great job for Coach Strauss as a graduate assistant and will assume a lot of responsibility as the Director of Operations and Assistant Coach for the program."
A native of Noblesville, Ind., Switzer played four years for the Bobcats. The midfielder played in eight games to start her collegiate career at Ohio before suffering a season-ending knee injury. Switzer then played in six matches as a sophomore before spending most of her junior and senior seasons as a starter. She finished her career with 24 starts and 46 games played.
"I am honored to be a part of the College of Charleston," said Switzer. "Coach Dempsey has done a great job getting the team to where they are now and I am looking forward to adding a little something more to the program."
Switzer earned a Bachelor's degree in Exercise Physiology in 2007, as well as a Master's Degree in Coaching Education this past June.
Barroqueiro and Switzer both hold coaching licenses through the NSCAA.
