Katelyn Ealer (Elon)
ELON, N.C. ? Elon University cross country and track athlete Katelyn Ealer (Bear, Del./Middletown) has been elected to the 2007-08 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America Women's Track and Field/Cross Country Third Team (University Division) as announced Wednesday afternoon by the College Sports Information Directors of America.
The athletes were nominated by their sports information directors and named to eight Academic All-District squads by a vote of CoSIDA members, leading to over 80 candidates on the national ballot for ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America consideration. Ealer emerged as one of three Southern Conference selections and one of nine District III honorees to be chosen to the 45-member Academic All-America team.
Ealer graduated Summa Cum Laude with a bachelor of art degree from Elon last month with a 3.96 cumulative grade-point average as a psychology major and a history minor. The eight-time President's List and Athletics Director's Honor Roll student appeared regularly on the TIAA-CREF Academic All-Southern Conference team and the Southern Conference Commissioner’s Medal list during her time at Elon.
Ealer was honored as the female A.L. Hook Scholar-Athlete at the annual Elon Athletics Awards Banquet last month, recognizing her as the Phoenix student-athlete with the highest cumulative GPA. It marked the second-straight year that she received that accolade. Ealer represented Elon as its No. 4 runner during the 2007 cross country campaign and finished fourth in the 10,000-meter run ? breaking her own Elon record with a time of 38:26.24 ? at the 2008 Southern Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championship.
The three-time Academic All-District III choice served the Phoenix distance runners as a team captain this past winter and spring. In addition to her four years on the Elon cross country and track and field squads, she also spent two years on the Phoenix jazz band. In 2006, Ealer represented the state of Delaware in the Best of the United States Amateur Triathlon National Championship.
While at Elon, Ealer was inducted into six National Honor Societies ? Chi Alpha Sigma (College Athletes), Phi Alpha Theta (History), Phi Eta Sigma (Freshmen), Phi Kappa Phi, Pi Gamma Mu (Social Sciences) and Psi Chi (Psychology) ? and was one of just three Rhodes Scholar nominees in 2007. She will attend graduate school at Old Dominion University this fall, pursuing a master of science degree in psychology.
Lauren Bosshardt (Wofford)
SPARTANBURG, S.C. ?Wofford cross country and track and field student-athlete Lauren Bosshardt has been named to the 2008 CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America Third Team for women’s track and cross country.
Bosshardt, from Greenville, S.C., graduated last month from Wofford with a degree in biology and a minor in neuroscience. She holds eight records at Wofford, including the cross country 5k and 6k, the indoor track 1500 meters, 3,000 meters and 5,000 meters and outdoor track 3,000 steeplechase, 5,000 meters and 10,000 meters.
A member of Phi Beta Kappa, she finished with a 3.98 grade point average and was the recipient of the William Stanley Hoole Award for the highest GPA by a senior Wofford student-athlete. Bosshardt received the 2008 Bob McCloskey Insurance Graduate Scholarship from the Southern Conference and plans to attend medical school at Emory University.
She was named Academic All-District second team in 2006 and All-District first team in 2007 and 2008. A member of the Southern Conference all-academic team for all four seasons, Bosshardt also received the SoCon Coleman Lew Leadership Award in 2007.
Bosshardt was the fourth Terrier to be named Academic All-District this season, joining Kyle Behrendt (baseball), Kevin Adleman (football) and Dan Tavani (football).
This marks the 24th time that a Wofford student-athlete has earned Academic All-America honors since 1990. Bosshardt is the first recipient since Lauren Stephenson (women’s golf) was honored in 2006.
