ELON, N.C. -- Elon freshman closer Thomas Girdwood (Charlotte, N.C.) and junior starting pitcher Steven Hensley (Asheville, N.C.) both hauled in more accolades on Tuesday.  Girdwood was named to the Second Team All-Freshman All-America team by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) and was also selected to the Second Team All Ping! Freshman Team.  Hensley was a Second Team All Ping! Baseball Team selection.

Girdwood, the 2008 Southern Conference Freshman of the Year as chosen by the league's coaches, was named to his second freshman all-America team.

In his rookie season, Girdwood posted a 5-2 record, 10 saves and a 4.15 ERA.  His 10 saves rank him in a tie for second on the school's single-season chart and in a tie for fourth on the program's career list.  He made 29 appearances this year, the fifth-most in the history of Elon baseball.  Girdwood threw 26.0 innings, walking just 19 and striking out 31 hitters.  Opponents batted just .233 off of the First Team All-SoCon selection.

Wofford’s Jake Williams was the only other Southern Conference player named to either of the two NCBWA teams.

Hensley, a fourth round selection by the Seattle Mariners in the 2008 June Draft, was the 2008 Southern Conference Pitcher of the Year and First Team All-SoCon selection after compiling a 10-2 record and 3.59 ERA in 16 appearances.  The right-handed throwing Hensley hurled 92.2 innings, striking out 99 hitters while issuing only 38 walks.  The 99 K's are the fourth-most in Elon history.  Opponents hit just .236 off of him in 2008.
 
For his career, Hensley holds Elon's record for strikeouts, fanning 302 hitters in three seasons. He posted a career mark of 24-12, the fourth most victories ever by an Elon hurler.
