Four Southern Conference baseball standouts were named to the All-PING! Baseball Team.
Georgia Southern University junior outfielder Chris Shehan (Strasburg, PA/Lampeter-Strasburg) was one of 10 players selected First Team All-PING!Baseball. College of Charleston's Jeremie Tice and Michael Harrington earned second team recognition as did Elon pitcher Steven Hensley.
Members of all three PING!Baseball teams can be found at www.pingbaseball.com. Three other Southern Conference representatives were on the Second and Third teams.
Shehan, who was featured on the PING!Baseball website in March, led the way offensively for the Eagles. The Southern Conference's 'Player of the Year' (sports media association) batted .438 - the fourth highest single-season average. The junior outfielder scored a GS record 84 runs and ranked among the season 'Top 10' in seven categories in all. He became the fifth Eagle to be named SoCon Player of the Year. Last week he was selected in the 30th round of the Major League Baseball draft by the Atlanta Braves.
College of Charleston third baseman Jeremie Tice was the 201st overall pickoff the 2008 MLB Draft. He hit .393 with 25 homers and 83 runs batted in this season for Charleston. Tice was named first team All-American by Collegiate Baseball and was also named the Southern Conference's Player of the Year by the league's coaches. Tice added 21 doubles, three triples and set the SoCon single-season mark with 192 total bases.
College of Charleston outfielder Michael Harrington was taken in the 13th round by the Minnesota Twins and was the 396th overall selection. Harrington, who was named first team All-SoCon, hit .316 with a school-record 26 homers and 82 runs batted in over 58 games. Harrington, who currently leads the nation in homers, added 15 doubles, two triples and scored 71 runs. Harrington earned third team All-American honors from Collegiate Baseball.
Elon pitcher Steven Hensley, a fourth round selection by the Seattle Mariners in the 2008 June Draft, was the 2008 Southern Conference Pitcher of the Year and First Team All-SoCon selection after compiling a 10-2 record and 3.59 ERA in 16 appearances. The right-handed throwing Hensley hurled 92.2 innings, striking out 99 hitters while issuing only 38 walks. The 99 K's are the fourth-most in Elon history. Opponents hit just .236 off of him in 2008.
In addition, three SoCon players, Elon's Thomas Girdwood, Furman's Reese Wade and Wofford's Jake Williams, were named to the 2008 All Ping! Freshman Teams, and a fourth, Davidson infielder Danny Weiss, was tabbed as an honorable mention selection.
