MT. PLEASANT, S.C. ? College of Charleston used a masterful pitching performance from Terri Mesko to down Elon, 8-0, in game 10 of the 2008 Southern Conference Softball Championship at the Patriots Point Athletics Complex.

 

College of Charleston improves to 33-32 and advances to face top-seeded Chattanooga in the final game of the day at approximately 6:30 p.m. Elon finishes the season at 26-27.

 

Mesko allowed just four Phoenix hits on the day while fanning 12 batters and issuing two walks. With the victory, she improves to 13-18.

 

Leadoff hitter Tiffany Harmon was the catalyst at the plate for the Cougars as she went 3-for-4 with a double and two RBI. Brittany Small added an RBI triple while Christal Kotchman drove in a pair of runs.

 

Mesko helped her cause at the plate by scoring twice and driving in a run as well.

 

Brandi Jones added a triple for the Phoenix.

 

 

 

Game 9: #1 Chattanooga 9, #7 Appalachian State 2

MT. PLEASANT, S.C. ? Chattanooga pounded out 11 hits and scored a run in all but one inning in the Lady Mocs’ 9-2 win over Appalachian State in game nine of the 2008 Southern Conference Softball Championship at the Patriots Point Athletics Complex.

 

Brooke Loudermilk, the SoCon Pitcher of the Year, surrendered just one hit in five innings of work while striking out seven ASU hitters and walking just one. The sophomore carried a no-hitter into the fifth inning before Ashley Gaston lined a solid single to left field. Loudermilk’s record improved to 15-7.

 

After scoring just four runs in its first two games, Chattanooga’s offense regained its hitting touch against the Mountaineers. Toni Hutchison drove in three runs including a solo home run in the fifth, her sixth round-tripper of the season. UTC leadoff hitter Tara Tembey was 3-for-5 at the plate while driving in a pair of runs. Laci Upchurch and Brittany Eason also collected two RBI on the afternoon.

 

Kayla Richardson dropped to 7-19 after allowing seven runs, all of them earned, in 5.2 innings of work.

 

Stephanie Long provided the Mountaineers’ only run of the game with a solo home run down the left field line in the bottom of the seventh inning.

 

The game which was originally scheduled to begin at 10:00 a.m. was delayed until 11:45 due to heavy rains in the Charleston area.

 

Chattanooga (37-20) stays alive in the tournament and will take on the winner of the College of Charleston/Elon game at 5:45 p.m. Appalachian State concludes the season with an 11-37overall record.
