High Winds Suspend Play At NCAA Women?s Golf Championship

Albuquerque, N.M. -- High winds gusting above 50 mph forced the suspension of Wednesday’s second round at the NCAA Division I Women’s Golf Championship at the University of New Mexico Championship Course.

Furman, which had its scheduled 1:10 p.m. first tee time backed up to 3:15 p.m. by an earlier suspension, was able to get through just one full hole as a team before NCAA rules officials suspended play until 7 a.m. Thursday morning.  The field will complete second round play at that time and the NCAA will announce plans for the remainder of the 72-hole tournament later tonight.

The gusting winds caused golf balls to roll off of the greens from a standing position prompting an early suspension before teams were sent back onto the course.  The second suspension was called at 4:55 p.m. MT.

Furman, 24-over par through the opening round was 12-over on the day when play was stopped.  UC Davis and LSU, playing along side the Paladins, were 14-over and nine-over, respectively, when play was suspended.

Thursday’s weather in Albuquerque is expected to once again contain high winds, but with a high of just 71 degrees.
