Furman Women Conclude Opening Round at NCAA Final

Albuquerque, N.M. -- The Furman women’s golf team struggled with the putters on Tuesday posting just two birdies after the round’s opening two holes as the Paladins shot a first round 312 at the NCAA Championship at the University of New Mexico Championship Course.

“I was disappointed in the way we played, but we also having five players going through the experience of an NCAA Final for the first time,” said Furman head coach Jen Hanna.  “It will be a good learning experience for us and hopefully we can use it to our advantage over the next three days.”

Furman got off to a quick start as Corrine Carr birdied her first hole and Jackie Hilea recorded an eagle, but Furman’s entire lineup struggled on the greens throughout the morning wave on the way to a 24-over-par round.

Freshman Stefanie Kenoyer led the way for Furman with a 76 while Hilea carded a five-over 77.  Blair Lamb shot 79 while Carr and Ashley Baker each started the 72-hole tournament with an eight-over 80.

The afternoon wave remained on the course at the time of the release. Wake Forest’s Nannette Hill took the lead after the morning wave with a five-under 67 to help the Demon Deacons to a first round 293.

Furman returns to the course at 1:10 p.m. on Wednesday for second round action.
