Furman in Fifth After Round Two; Kirchmayr Making a Charge

Furman Fires Second Round 307, Holds Share Of Fifth At NCAA East Regional

 

Athens, Ga. -- Furman (292-307=599) fired a second round 307 to hold a share of fifth place and remain in contention for a bid to the NCAA Championship on Friday afternoon at the NCAA East Regional at the par-72 University of Georgia Golf Course.

 

Blair Lamb (76-74=150) led the Paladins on Friday with a two-over-par 74.  The Flat Rock, N.C., native started at three-over through three holes, but played the back nine at two-under-par to move into a tie for 18th place.

 

Corrine Carr (69-76=145), in fourth place after Thursday’s opening round, carded and four-over 76 to hold a share of seventh.  The sophomore used a birdie at the par-3 No. 16 to finish the final three holes at one-under and grab a top 10 spot.  She trails tournament leader Benedicte Toumpsin (68-70=138) of South Carolina by seven strokes and the second place duo of Duke’s Amanda Blumenherst and Louisville’s Sara-Maude Juneau by four strokes entering Saturday.

 

Freshmen Stefanie Kenoyer (75-78-153) and Jackie Hilea (72-79=151) shot 78 and 79, respectively, to contribute to the Paladins second round total. 

 

Florida (290-295=585) notched the day’s best score at seven-over 295 to take first place away from first round leader Duke (285-303=588).  The Blue Devils dropped to second place only three shots back of the Gators.  South Carolina (291-303=594) is in third with Auburn (296-302=598) fourth and Georgia (299-300=599) tied with Furman for fifth.  Wake Forest (298-305=603) and New Mexico (304-301=605) round out the top eight.

 

No. 12 seed Furman, making its 16th consecutive NCAA Regional appearance, will begin final round play with a seven-stroke edge on ninth place Virginia.  The top eight teams and top two individuals not on the top eight teams advance to the NCAA Championship set for May 20-23, at the University of New Mexico.

 

Final round action is set for Saturday with the Paladins scheduled to tee-off of No. 10 with Auburn and Georgia, beginning at 8:10 a.m.

Kirchmayr Moves into Top Five at NCAA Regional

 

Austin, Texas - College of Charleston's Steffi Kirchmayr carded a two-under 70 to jump six spots and claim a share of fourth place after the second round of the NCAA Women's Golf Central Regional Tournament being held May 8-10 at the University of Texas Golf Club in Austin, Texas.

 

The native of Pocking, Germany, earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament as an individual.  The two-time Southern Conference Player-of-the-Year tied for third in the league tournament April 22.

 

Kirchmayr is tied for fourth with another individual playing in the regional, Aruka Felgueroso of Coastal Carolina.  Both have a 141 with 36 of 54 holes in.

 

The junior had a solid performance in the second round, posting six birdies.  She was three-under heading into the 17th hole but took a double-bogey to drop to one-under.  Kirchmayr rebounded on 18 with a birdie to finish the round two-under.

 

Kirchmayr tees off from hole 10 in the third round.  Her tee time is 8:00 a.m.

 

The top two individuals, not on a team that finishes in the top eight, will advance to the NCAA Championship being held May 20-23 at the University of New Mexico Championship Golf Course in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

 

 

de Groot Remains in Contention After Day

 

ATHENS, Ga. -- Chattanooga freshman Emma de Groot shot a 4-over 76 Friday to stay in the top 20 after Day Two of the NCAA Women’s Golf East Regional at the par 72, 6,335 yard UGA Golf Course.

 

De Groot remains in contention to advance to the NCAA National Championships in New Mexico May 20-23. She started the day with a bogey on the first hole but evened it out by the sixth hole with her lone birdie of the day. On the back nine she recorded bogeys on 12 and 15 to close out the day 4-over.

 

First Round leader Duke, the overall No. 1 team, shot a 15-over Friday to drop three strokes behind No. 5 Florida with a 12-over 588. The Gators are the leaders after two rounds with a 9-over 585. South Carolina is third with a 594 followed by Auburn with a 598.

 

Host Georgia moved up four spots to a fifth place tie with the Southern Conference’s Furman University. Both schools are sporting a 599 through two rounds. Wake Forest, with a 603, and New Mexico, with a 605, round out the top eight. Louisville dropped down to 10th from fifth and Virginia is ninth with a 606.

 

Benedicte Toumpsin of South Carolina shot a 4-under par Friday to move into the top spot over Duke’s Amanda Blumenherst by three strokes. First round leader Sara-Maude Juneau is tied for second at 3-under and Geogia’s Krystle Caithness moved up one spot to fourth with a two-round score of 143 (-1). UNC Wilmington’s Carmen Perez is tied with Caithness at fourth with an identical 1-under par.

 

Corrine Carr of Furman shot a 4-over Friday and moved from fourth to a four-way tie for seventh. De Groot is the tied for the fifth best score among individuals not on the top eight teams after two rounds. The top eight teams will advance to the nationals along with top two individuals not on those teams.

 

The regionals conclude Saturday and de Groot will tee off at 8:00 a.m. from the 10th tee. Live scoring is available at www.Golfstat.com.
