WCU's Evans Named Track and Field Athlete of the Week

SPARTANBURG, S.C. ?The Southern Conference’s track & field coaches selected Matt Evans of Western Carolina as the men’s track & field Athlete of the Week.

 

Evans, a sophomore from Old Fort, N.C., placed second in the invitational section of the javelin at the Florida Relays.  Evans set a new Western Carolina school record and improved on his NCAA regional qualifying mark with a toss of 218-8-feet.  Evans throw of 218-8-feet places him in the top 15 in the NCAA.  He placed seventh in the high jump with a leap of 6-8 ?-feet.  Evans leads the Southern Conference in the javelin and high jump.

 

 

Other Top Performers:

Manteo Mitchell of Western Carolina placed fourth in the 400-meters at the Florida Relays with a time of 46.68 and improved on his NCAA regional qualifying time of 46.92.  Manteo’s 400-meter time of 46.68 puts him in the top 10 in the nation in the 400-meters.  He placed ninth in the 200-meters with a time of 21.15 and ran the first leg of the 4x100-meter relay.  Mitchell has the fastest times in the Southern Conference in the 200-meters, 400-meters, 4x100-meter relay and 4x400-meter relay.

 

Patrick Morgan, junior from Furman, competed at the Stanford Invitational and placed 30th is a highly competitive field of middle distance runners.  Morgan’s time of 1:51.73 was a personal best and tops in the Southern Conference in the 800-meters.

 

Alex Plasencia, a junior form Furman won the 5,000-meters at the Chabot Relays and Distance Festival with a personal best and conference leading time of 14:54.  Plasencia has won every 5,000-meters he has entered this season.

 

AJ Savoia of UNC Greensboro placed ninth at the Duke Invitational with a time of 9:23.77.  He broke his own personal best and school record by 10 seconds.  His time of 9:23.77 leads the Southern Conference in the steeplechase.
