Furman Defeats Wofford 6-1 To Stay Atop League Standings

GREENVILLE, S.C. ? The 66th-ranked Furman women’s tennis team earned a 6-1 win over Wofford to claim the annual Pinson Trophy Challenge for the fourth consecutive year as the Paladins celebrated senior day at their last home match of the season.

 

Furman took the early lead with a sweep of the doubles matches. At the top spot, the team of Laura Gioia and Natasa Manojlovic topped Merry Ellen Henry and Laura Lynn Williams by a score of 8-5. In the number two spot, Monica Arguello and Lauren Osborne blanked Adriane Hodges and Cayley Wetzig, while Jessica Preeg and Jennifer Betts defeated Sonia Anand and Haley Baird 8-5 in the number three spot.

 

The Paladins earned quick victories at the one, two, and three spots to claim the match. At the top spot, junior Laura Gioia blanked Merry Ellen Henry 6-0, 6-0. At flight two, freshman Monica Arguello defeated Adriane Hodges 6-1, 6-1, and senior Lauren Osborne claimed a 6-0, 6-0 win over Sabrina Smyers in the last home match of her career.

 

With the win, the Paladins improve to 14-5 overall and 7-0 in league play, while Wofford falls to 12-5 and 4-3 in the Southern Conference.

 

Furman will travel to Western Carolina on Wednesday. If the Paladins defeat the Catamounts, they will claim at least a share of the Southern Conference regular season championship.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Davidson continued its end of the season winning ways by taking home its fourth straight win with a 7-0 blanking of Charlotte in a battle of cross-county rivals on Tuesday afternoon in non-conference win's tennis action at the Phillips Tennis Complex. The Wildcats have won seven of their last eight matches.

The Wildcats improved to 16-4 as they head into their final week of regular season matches before the Southern Conference tournament. Davidson also ran its all-time record against its cross-county rival to 15-7. Charlotte fell to 4-12 overall.

Senior Kelsey Linville (Columbus, Ohio) and sophomore Virginia Berry (Spartanburg, S.C.) led the way in doubles action with an 8-6 win at No. 1 to run their record to 13-5 as a team. Davidson also scored a win at the No. 2 doubles to capture the doubles point.

Then in singles action junior Michele Fanney (Virginia Beach, Va.) and senior Kim Whelan (Sewickley, Pa.) each picked up their fourth and fifth straight singles wins, respectively, to guide the Wildcats to the 7-0 triumph. Fanney tallied a three-set win to score her 12th singles victory of the season.

Whelan ran her overall singles mark to 15-4 after capturing a 6-4, 6-3 win at No. 4. The senior has picked up seven of her wins at the No. 4 spot where she is 7-1 on the season.

Also tallying singles wins was Linville, Berry and freshman Alison Rauh (Trier, Germany), who took home a 6-1, 6-1 decision at No. 5 over Gabi Vergara.

Davidson closes out its season with two home SoCon matches starting first with Wofford on Friday, Apr. 11 at 3 p.m.

GREENSBORO, NC ? UNC Greensboro recorded seven shutout sets, including Perry Loeser’s 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 5 singles, as the Spartans swept Winston-Salem State, 7-0, in women’s tennis action Tuesday afternoon.

 

Loeser, playing in place of Erica Zabkar, who got a day off, blanked Jessica Smith by identical 6-0 scores. The Spartans also gave No. 1 singles player Alejandra Guerra a day off, and the rest of the line-up moved up a slot and responded, led by Arielle VonStrolley’s win at the top of the line-up. She topped Laken Joyce, 6-0 and 6-1, followed by Courtney Akel’s win at No. 2 over Johana Nunez, 6-1 and 6-0.

 

The Spartans, currently in a stretch of five matches in eight days, return to action on Thursday when they host backyard rival Elon at 3 pm.
