UNCG second, Creed second at UNCW
WALLACE, N.C. ? UNC Greensboro freshman Erica Creed shot a final round 73, but lost on the first sudden-death playoff hole to finish second, as did the Spartans as a team at the UNCW Lady Seahawk Invitational on Tuesday afternoon at River Landing Golf Club.
Creed, a native of Kernersville, NC, was the leader when the day began on Tuesday. Monday’s play was halted due to darkness with one hole remaining.
Creed finished out with a 70 in the second round to hold the lead going into the third round. UNC Wilmington’s Carmen Perez-Narbon carded a 71, however, to force a sudden-death playoff.
In the playoff, Narbon reached the Par 4, 368-yard first hole in regulation and sank a par putt, while Creed's approach shot sailed wide of the green and she finished with a bogey.
Ashley Mylton also earned a Top 10 finish for the Spartans, placing sixth. She finished up her second round on Tuesday morning with a 72 and the shot a 73 in the final round.
UNC Greensboro finished second in the team standings, one shot behind North Carolina State. The Spartans began the final round one shot ahead of Campbell. NC State, however, shot 291 in the final round, topping UNCG’s 300, to come away with the team honors. UNC Wilmington, the tournament host, was third.
UNCG competes next at the Southern Conference Championship beginning April 20.

Paladins Climb To Second Place Finish At Canes & Cardinal Classic
Miami Lakes, Fla. -- The Furman women’s golf team carded rounds of 289 and 292 on Tuesday to finish second at the Canes & Cardinal Classic at the 6,210-yard Don Shula Golf Club in Miami Lakes, Fla.
Furman (303-289-292=884) resumed second round play on Tuesday morning, suspended late Monday by rain and lightning, and posted a one-over-par 289 to climb into the top five. The Paladins, ranked 35th in the latest Golfweek/Sagarin Performance Index, followed with a four-over 292 in the afternoon to finish in a tie with 36th-ranked Georgia State for second place at 20-over-par for the tournament.
No. 27 Louisville (284-297-290=871) captured first place and the Cardinals’ Cindy LaCrosse (67-74-71=212) took individual medalist honors at four-under-par.
Furman’s Blair Lamb (72-74-71=217) grabbed a share of fifth place with a 54-hole score of one-over-par. Lamb posted a two-over 74 Tuesday morning before shooting a one-under 71 in the afternoon’s final round. Paladin freshmen Jaclyn Hilea (79-70-73=222) and Stefanie Kenoyer (74-73-75=222) finished in a tie for 16th at six-over-par. Hilea, a native of Kaneohe, Hawai’i, posted a two-under 70 in round two before finishing the tournament with a final round 73. Corrine Carr (79-72-73=224) played the final two rounds at one-over to take a share of 23rd place.
The Paladins finished ahead of both 25th-ranked Notre Dame and 33rd-ranked Tulsa in the 15-team event.
Furman returns to action April 15-17, at the Southern Conference Championships in Charleston, S.C.

Kirchmayr Leads Cougars with a Tie for Second
Miami, Fla. - Steffi Kirchmayr shot a 69 in the third round to move her into a tie for second as the College of Charleston women's golf team finished sixth, just one stroke out of the top five with an 889 in three rounds. Louisville won the tournament with an 871.
Following Kirchmayr and her 216 was Fiona Puyo with her 223 for a tie for 18th. Joanna Klatten and Emily Rapp tied for 25th with a 225 apiece, while Courtney Brink finished 61st with a 236.
The Cougars are off until April 20-22 when they host the Southern Conference tournament at the Links at Stono Ferry in Charleston.

Sophomore Desiree Karlsson Leads WCU to Seventh Place Finish at UNCW Lady Seahawk Invitational Karlsson posted the lowest score of Tuesday’s final round as WCU records top 10

Under cloudy skies and cool temperatures, Western Carolina sophomore Desiree Karlsson posted a three-round score of 220 (75-75-70) to post a top five performance, finishing tied for fourth to lead the Catamounts at the UNC Wilmington Lady Seahawk Invitational Tuesday afternoon at the par 72, 6,183-yard River Landing Golf Course.
WCU shot a 54-hole score of 912, firing rounds of 305 and 302 on the afternoon to finished seventh out of 16 teams. The score was the 10th-best, three-round score in program’s history.
North Carolina State erased an eight-shot deficit to capture the team championship, while UNC Wilmington’s Carmen Perez-Narbon edged UNC Greensboro’s Erica Creed on the first playoff hole for individual medalist honors.
UNC Greensboro finished second, just one stroke off the pace at 897, while the host Lady Seahawks were third overall with an even three-round score of 900. First-round leading Campbell (902) finished fourth, with East Tennessee State rounding out the top five, four strokes in arrears at 906.
Karlsson duplicated her opening round 75 in the second 18 holes, following it up with the lowest score of the third round at 70 to shoot 220, which is tied for the eighth-best, 54-hole score in school history. Her 70 was also tied for the second-best round of the tournament, surpassed only by Perez-Narbon’s 68 in round two.
Karlsson recorded her second-straight top 10 individual finish, and her second top five of the year.
Sophomore Josefine Sundh posted an even-par 72 in the second round, finishing the tournament at 228 to place tied for 22nd. Freshman Tiffany Schisler again tied her career-low round of 77 on the final 18 holes to post her best-career, 54-hole score of 233. The Nags Head, N.C., native also improved upon her top career finish by placing tied for 41st.
Rounding out Western’s finishers were sophomore Elin MIckelsson (t-70th, 239) and freshman Katja Dammann (t-73rd, 240), who bounced back from an opening 84 to post consecutive rounds of six-over, 78.
Western Carolina, the two-time and defending conference champions, will now turn its attention to the Southern Conference Women’s Golf Championship, April 20-22 at the Links at Stono Ferry in Charleston, S.C. The winner earns the league’s automatic berth into the NCAA tournament. WCU has finished no worse than fourth over the past five seasons, winning twice and posting a pair of runner-up finishes.

Elon Ends Up Eighth at UNCW Lady Seahawk Classic
WALLACE, N.C. ? Danielle Mills followed up a one-under-par 71 in the second round with a three-over-par 75 in the third round to lift Elon to an eighth-place finish in the 16-team UNCW Lady Seahawk Classic Tuesday afternoon on the 6,183-yard River Landing Golf Course.
Mills (76-71-75?222) claimed a share of sixth place in the 90-player field of the three-round, two-day event. UNC Wilmington’s Carmen Perez-Narbon (78-68-71?217) out-dueled UNC Greensboro’s Erica Creed (74-70-73?217) in a playoff to capture medalist honors of the 54-hole tournament.
Samantha Widmer (Tied-13th/75-75-75?225), Tara McFadden (Tied-51st/79-82-73?234), Kelsey Johnson (Tied-57th/79-78-78?235) and Taylor Johnson (Tied-80th/82-86-76?244) all contributed to the Phoenix cause.
