GREENVILLE, S.C. ? The 67th-ranked Furman women’s tennis team earned a close 4-3 victory over non-conference foe Boston University on Sunday at the Mickel Tennis Center.
The Terriers took an early lead by winning the doubles point. At the top spot, the Paladin tandem of Laura Gioia and Natasa Manojlovic defeated Francine Whu and Vanessa Steiner by a score of 8-3. At number two doubles, the team of Cori Lefkowith and Danielle Abraham topped Lauren Osborne and Monica Arguello by a score of 8-5, while the Terrier team of Elizabeth Corrao and Yana Sadovskaya earned a win over Jessica Preeg and Christina Swindall at number three doubles.
Furman earned two quick points in singles, with freshman Monica Arguello earning a 6-1, 6-0 win over Vanessa Steiner at the number two spot and Lauren Osborne topping Yana Sadovskaya 6-2, 6-1 at number three singles.
Natasa Manojlovic earned another point for the Paladins with a 6-4, 6-0 victory at the number five spot, and junior Laura Gioia sealed the win for Furman with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Francine Whu at the top singles spot.
With the win, Furman improves to 13-5 on the season and remains at 6-0 in Southern Conference play, while Boston University falls to 7-7 overall.
The Paladins will resume SoCon play on Tuesday as they host Wofford. The match will feature the competition for the Pinson Challenge Trophy, an annual competition between the two schools. Furman has won the trophy for the past three years.

Anna Lee Evans won her 15th straight match leading the College of Charleston women's tennis team to a 7-0 win over Appalachian State in Southern Conference tennis action Sunday in Boone, N.C.
The Cougars, who play at Georgia Southern at 2:30 on Wednesday, improved to 20-3 overall and 7-1 in league play. ASU fell to 7-10 and 1-8.
After the Cougars swept the doubles point, Anna Lee Evans defeated Lindsay King 6-1, 6-1 at No. 5 singles. Chelsea Albertz bested Anja Gugger 6-1, 6-1 at No. 1 singles, Laura Borza beat Monica Tomas 6-4, 6-4 at No. 2, Link Leskosky downed Amanda Cash 6-2, 6-1 at No. 3, Holly Dowse earned a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Elizabeth Holland at No. 4 and at No. 5 singles Amanda Becker claimed a 6-4, 6-3 decision over Caroline Mauch.
Chattanooga 5, Western Carolina 2
CULLOWHEE, N.C. --- Three University of Tennessee at Chattanooga freshmen recorded tennis singles victories Sunday to lead the Lady Mocs to a 5-2 Southern Conference win over Western Carolina.
Grace Robinette, Annie Green and Arianna Sanjines each earned singles wins at their respective positions to help Chattanooga improve to 8-10 overall and 2-6 against SoCon competition.
The Lady Mocs swept all three doubles matches for the doubles point and the early 1-0 advantage.
Green’s 6-2, 6-0 win at No. 5 singles over Susanna Sjokvist proved to be the clinching victory for Head Coach Jeff Clark’s team.
Sanjines pushed the team score to 2-0 with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Emily Turke at the No. 6 spot, and junior Beata Knizat picked up a win at No. 4 by the same score over Mariona Trilla Janes.
Robinette produced a 2-6, 6-3, 1-0(5) victory over Trish Hanson at No. 2 singles.
The Catamounts, 3-13, 0-6, notched team points at the No. 1 and No. 3 positions. Tessie Salame registered a 6-3, 6-4 win over senior Lindsey Ballard, and Amanda Massey defeated senior Bonnie Adams, 6-1, 7-5 at No. 3.
The Lady Mocs conclude the regular season Saturday at Georgia Southern at 2 p.m.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. ? Friday’s weather forecast in the North Carolina area forced the Georgia Southern women’s tennis team to compete in back-to-back matches on Sunday, as the Eagles defeated Winston-Salem State by a 7-0 decision, before falling to Elon 4-3.
The Eagles (9-9, 2-5 SoCon) had to travel to multiple locations on Sunday, opening play against the Lady Rams of Winston-Salem State at 9 a.m., before traveling to Elon for their 2:30 p.m. matchup with the Phoenix.
The Eagles surpassed last season’s mark of eight victories with their win over Winston-Salem State.
In their matchup with Winston-Salem State, GSU gained the early advantage taking all three matches in doubles competition. In the revised doubles lineup, Christine Caforio (Acworth, Ga.) and Ali Beavers (Kingsport, Tenn.) dropped Shannon Loughnan and Laken Joyce at the No. 1 position by a final of 8-1. Molly Maddox (Rome, Ga.) and Melanie Rolle (Gainesville, Fla.) were successful from the No. 2 seed over Gabrielle Benjamin and Johanna Nunez 8-2.
In singles action, GSU recorded victories from all six positions. Beavers earned the 13th victory of her freshman campaign ousting Laken Joyce in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0 from the No. 2 seed. Senior Kelli Helms (Cairo, Ga.) improved her record to 3-0 on the year as she defeated Jade Heggins 6-0, 6-0 from the No. 6 slot.
The Eagles return to the hard-courts Wednesday, April 9 as they play host to the College of Charleston. The match is slated for a 2:30 p.m. start.

ELON, N.C. ? On alumni weekend and with temperatures hovering in the 40s throughout the day, the women’s tennis team ended their two-game skid with a 4-3 victory over Georgia Southern at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center.
The team improves to 13-8 on the year and is now 4-3 in the Southern Conference. The Lady Eagles drop to 8-9 and 2-5 in league play.
Elon clinched the doubles point with victories at the one and two spots. The duo of Deanna Bailey and Anna Milian defeated Christine Caforio and Ali Beavers 8-4. Paige Kensrue and Whitney Butcher edged the pair of Molly Maddox and Melanie Rolle by the same score. Kristi Kegerreis and Jessica Matlosz of Georgia Southern defeated the duo of Jenn Tucci and Hayley Wahl 8-5 at number three doubles.
Elon claimed victories in the number one, two, and three singles matches. Bailey, playing at number one singles, defeated Kegerreis 6-3, 6-1. At the number two spot, Milian came away with a win over Rolle 6-4, 6-3. Kensrue claimed the final singles point for Elon at the number three spot with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Beavers.
Rounding out singles play was Maddox (over Laura Graybill 6-2, 6-1), Caforio (over Wahl 6-3, 2-6, (7-5)), and Jessica Fuller (over Butcher 2-6, 6-4 (7-6)).

UNC Greensboro 5, Coastal Carolina 1
GREENSBORO, NC ? UNC Greensboro won five of six singles matches, including Alejandra Guerra’s 13th straight win and Erica Zabkar’s ninth win in her last 12, as the Spartans rolled to a 5-1 win over Coastal Carolina in a non-conference women’s tennis match on Sunday.
Guerra, a junior from Tampico, Mexico, handled Amy Pazahanick, 7-5 and 6-1, at No. 1 singles to get things started for UNCG. She is now 14-2 on the spring season. Meanwhile, Zabkar, a senior from Atlanta, GA, blitzed Maria Camberos and No. 5 singles, 6-3 and 6-1.
Other UNCG singles wins came from Arielle VonStrolley, Britney Cloer and Valerie Behr to complete the victory. The doubles matches were played due to threatening weather.
The Spartans begin a stretch of four matches in six days when they host Winston-Salem State on Tuesday at 3:30 pm.
