Davidson 6, South Carolina State 1
DAVIDSON, N.C. ? By taking five of the six singles matches and sweeping the doubles, the Davidson men's tennis team scored their fifth straight win at home in earning a 6-1 decision against South Carolina State on Saturday afternoon in the Knobloch Tennis Center.
The Wildcats improved to 13-5 overall with the non-conference win and 8-3 against non-league opponents. The Bulldogs fell to 11-3 with the loss.
Davidson opened the match by taking all three doubles matches for the first time since it swept all three spots against Presbyterian on Feb. 16. Getting back on the winning track was the team of senior Phillip Compeau and sophomore Eric Noble with an 8-6 win at No. 2. The duo snapped their four-match losing streak to improve to 5-8 on the year.
Noble along with four other of his teammates then scored singles wins at positions No. 1-5 to seal the 6-1 win. The sophomore earned a two-set win over Radek Pivonka with a victory at No. 2 to push his singles mark to 9-8.
The trio of senior Flaviu Simihaian, freshman Walker Lyons and sophomore Sam Burns each picked up their 10th singles wins of the season with victories at No. 1, 4 and 5.
Finally, junior Ethan Jaffee take home his third singles win in his last four matches by scoring a 6-4, 6-3 decision over Jan Langer at No. 3.
The 'Cats turn around and travel to Greenville, N.C. for a 12 p.m. match against East Carolina tomorrow, Apr. 6.

Furman 6, Elon 1
ELON, N.C. - The 73rd-ranked Furman men's tennis team remains on top of the Southern Conference with a 6-1 win over 75th-ranked Elon on Saturday.
Furman took the 1-0 lead, winning the doubles point with victories at number two and three doubles. At number two, the Paladin tandem of Jordan Walters and Bo Ladyman topped Mason Schermerhorn and Alberto Rojas by a score of 8-5, while the team of Andrei Chvetsov and Chris Rhyne defeated Chase Helpingstine and Cody Stauffer McDowe 6-5 at the third spot.
In singles play, Furman earned wins in all flights except for number five, where Elon's Philip Nemec defeated Walters 1-6, 6-2, 6-3. At the top spot, Andy Juc earned a 7-5, 4-6, 7-5 over Damon Gooch. At number two singles, Ladyman topped Oscar Podlewski in straight sets (6-3, 6-3), while Daniel Knause earned a win over Schermerhorn in the number three spot by scores of 6-3, 6-7, 6-4. Chris Motes defeated Alberto Rojas 5-7, 6-3, 6-1 at number four singles, and Sawyer Duncan topped Chase Helpingstine 7-5, 6-7 (4-7), 6-4 to complete the match.
"This was a great tennis college tennis match that we were fortunate to win. It was a hard-fought match against a very talented Elon team," Furman Head Coach Paul Scarpa said. With the win, Furman improves to 10-10 on the season and remains undefeated in the Southern Conference with a 6-0 record.
Elon falls to 13-8 overall and 7-2 in league play. Furman will take the court again on Sunday as they travel to UNC Greensboro.
Appalachian State 4, College of Charleston 1
BOONE, N.C.- The Appalachian State men's tennis team pulled off an impressive win Saturday night against SoCon foe College of Charleston, as the Mountaineers defeated the Cougars 4-1. With the win Appalachian improves to 10-8 overall and 3-3 in SoCon action, while CofC drops to 7-15 on the season and 1-8 in the conference.
The match got off to a strong start as the Apps were able to capture the crucial doubles point.
At the No. 2 doubles spot, the duo of Lee Floyd and Peter Jacobs were able to grab a commanding win over Joe Nicolazzi and Ross Moyer, winning 8-4. Bobby Lake and Trent Constance put up a solid effort at the No. 1 spot as they were down 7-4 at one point, but were not able to rally a comeback and fell just short, losing 8-6.
The deciding match in doubles play came down to the No. 3 spot, as Ryan Brookshaw and David Doverspike were able to pick up a win against Don Murray and Jimmy Petit to give ASU the doubles win.
The Mountaineers posted solid performances in singles play as well, as three Apps were able to close out the match to give Appalachian the go-ahead win.
At the No.1 position, Lake battled back and forth with Omer Abramovich. Lake narrowly won the first set 7-5, and was tied with Abramovich in the second set at five all, before Abramovich retired, to give Lake the win.
Ryan Brookshaw was not quite as lucky as Lake at the No. 2 spot, as he lost in two sets to his opponent, falling 6-3 and 7-5.
At the No.3 and No.4 positions, Constance and Jacobs notched important wins over their competition, each winning in two sets to help lead ASU to the win.
The Mountaineers will return to action Tuesday April 8, as they face SoCon rival Wofford on the road. The match is set to begin at 4 p.m.
