Charleston and The Citadel Pick Up Wins on Friday

College of Charleston 7, Lees-McRae 0

 

Banner Elk, N.C. -- The College of Charleston men's tennis team blanked Lees-McRae, 9-0, in men's college tennis action in Banner Elk, N.C. on Friday.

 

With the win, Charleston improved to 7-14 on the season. The Bobcats are 7-11. Charleston plays at Appalachian State at 1:00 on Saturday.

 

After the Cougars swept the doubles points, Mickael Boyer won at No. 1 singles 7-5, 6-2 over Nandor Solymosi, at No. 2 Steven Myers won 6-4, 6-4 over Alex Mojski, Joe Nicalozzi beat Romulus Teague 6-2, 6-0 at No. 3, at No. 4 Ross Moyer earned a 6-7, 6-2, 10-5 win over Shaun Sumner, Jimmy Petit defeated Travis VanHoy 6-2, 6-1 at No. 5 and at No. 6 Chris Carlton won 6-2, 6-0 over Blair Propert.

 

Appalachian State 2, High Point 4

 

BOONE, N.C.- The Appalachian State men's tennis team lost a hard-fought match to High Point University Friday afternoon, as the Panthers beat the Mountaineers 4-2. With the loss, ASU drops to 9-8 on the season, while High Point improves to 9-5 overall.

The match began with singles action, as just two Mountaineers were able to notch wins on the afternoon.

At the No. 1 spot, Bobby Lake played a challenging opponent in Charles Bottoni, and fell in two sets, losing 6-3 and 6-0. Ryan Brookshaw rallied back after trailing early at the No. 2 position to push the match into three sets. Brookshaw prevailed, and defeated his opponent, winning 2-6, 6-3 and 6-4.

Both Trent Constance and Lee Floyd lost to their competition in two sets, as Constance fell 4-6 and 3-6, while Floyd lost 2-6 and 4-6 respectively.

The most impressive performance of the day came from Peter Jacobs as he easily defeated Jim Trussler at the No. 5 spot, winning in two sets, 6-0 and 6-2.

The Mountaineers had to win the sixth and final singles match in order to play the doubles matches.

Despite a strong effort, including a comeback in the third set, winning two straight games, David Doverspike was unable to beat Maxime Dutois, falling in three close sets. Doverspike took the first set 6-4, but lost the final two 4-6 and 4-6.

Doubles was not played due to the match already being decided by singles action.

The Mountaineers will have little time to rest, as they host SoCon opponent College of Charleston Saturday April 5. The time and location of the match is dependent on the weather, stay logged on to GOASU.com for updates.

 

The Citadel 5, Georgia Southern 2

 

Charleston, S.C. ? The Citadel Bulldog tennis team defeated Georgia Southern Friday afternoon at the Earle Tennis Center, 5-2.

The Citadel struck first to claim the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles. James Eason and Alberto Diaz defeated Emmanuel Nkoueleue and Borja Malet, 8-5, at No. 1, while Daniel Dossetor and Yufo Sutantio pulled out the win against Joris De Weerdt and Matthew Sands, 8-4, at No. 2 doubles.

 

The Bulldogs continued on to win at No. 1, No. 2, No. 3 and No. 5 singles to win the match, 5-2. Dossetor won at No. 1 singles (6-3, 6-4), Yufo Sutantio battled through No. 2 singles to win (7-5, 1-6, 6-1), as Eason won No. 3 singles (6-1, 6-0) and Martin King finished off the Eagles at No. 5 singles (1-6, 6-2, 6-2).

 

The Citadel improves to 15-9 (5-3 SoCon) on the season, while Georgia Southern slips to 8-10 (4-4 SoCon).
