Appalachian State 4, High Point 3
BOONE, N.C.- The Appalachian State women's tennis team won a close match Friday afternoon against High Point University. It came down to the wire, as the Mountaineers had to move the deciding doubles match indoors to Yonahlossee, to beat the Panthers 4-3. With the win, ASU improves to 7-10 overall, while High Point drops to 5-9 on the season.
The match began with singles action, as three Mountaineers were able to pick up wins against their opponents.
At the No. 1 position, Anja Gugger posted a solid effort, but could not quite pull out a win, falling in two sets, 6-2 and 6-3. Monica Tomas was able to get the Mountaineers back on track, as she handily defeated Kelly Tolman in two sets, winning 6-4 and 6-1.
Both Amanda Cash and Elizabeth Holland struggled at the No. 3 and No. 4 spots, as both lost to their competition in two sets.
Rounding out singles action, Lindsay King posted yet another impressive performance as she won in three close sets, winning 2-6, 7-5 and 6-1. Caroline Mauch was strong as well, as she won in two sets over her opponent.
The outcome of the match came down to doubles play.
Gugger and Laura Janke were victorious at the No. 1 doubles spot, defeating Tolman and Mount 8-6. The duo of Cash and King were unable to notch a win as they lost at the No. 3 spot, falling 8-3.
The team of Tomas and Mauch played a very close match at the No. 2 spot, and were down 7-6 before the match had to be moved indoors to Yonahlossee due to heavy rain. Tomas and Mauch made a comeback on the indoor courts, and were able to defeat their opponent 9-7, with the last match coming down to a tie-breaker and ASU prevailing 7-2.
The Apps will return to action Sunday April 6 as they host Southern Conference foe College of Charleston. The match is set to begin at Noon, and will be played at the Rivers Street Tennis Courts.
College of Charleston 5, Wofford 2
SPARTANBURG, S.C. - The College of Charleston women's tennis team remained unbeaten in Southern Conference play with its 5-2 win over Wofford at the Reeves Tennis Center Friday morning.
The Cougars, who play at No. 67 Furman on Saturday at 10:00 a.m., improved to 19-2 overall and 6-0 in league play. Charleston has won 10 straight matches. Wofford fell to 12-4 and 4-2.
Due to the threat of inclement weather, the match began with singles action. Down 1-0, junior Merry Ellen Henry captured a 6-3, 6-3 victory at the No. 1 position over Chelsea Albertz to tie the match. The Cougars rallied for three straight wins to clinch the match. Although down 4-1, freshman Sonia Anand battled for a 6-3, 6-2 win over Amanda Becker at the No. 6 slot to give Wofford its second point.
Charleston's Anna Lee Evans won her 13th straight match downing Cayley Wetzig 6-3, 6-2 at No. 5 singles.
With singles action ending before the rain, the teams had an opportunity to battle in doubles competition. The Cougars swept Wofford to end the match.
