ELON, N.C. ? Damon Gooch, Oscar Podlewski, Mason Schermerhorn, Alberto Rojas and Chase Helpingstine all claimed singles victories as No. 75 Elon downed Davidson 6-1 in Southern Conference men’s tennis action Wednesday afternoon at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center.
Gooch (over Flaviu Simihaian 7-5, 6-1 at No. 1), Podlewski (over Eric Noble 6-1, 6-2 at No. 2), Schermerhorn (over Walker Lyons 6-3, 6-0 at No. 3), Rojas (over Sam Burns 6-2, 6-1 at No. 4) and Helpingstine (over Arie Hefter 6-1, 6-2 at No. 6) all won for the Phoenix (13-7 overall, 7-1 SoCon).
The Wildcats (12-5 overall, 5-2 SoCon), who saw their four-match winning streak come to an end, pulled out a victory at No. 5 singles when Scott Myers rallied past Philip Nemec 4-6, 6-1, 10-8.
Elon captured the doubles point when Schermerhorn and Rojas beat Noble and Phillip Compeau 8-5 at No. 2 and Helpingstine and Cody Stauffer-MacDowell edged Lyons and Burns 8-6 at No. 3. Davidson picked up a win at No. 1 doubles when Simihaian and Ethan Jaffee overcame Gooch and Nemec 8-6.
“This was one of our better performances,” Elon coach Michael Leonard said. “I’m proud of the way our team played, especially in doubles. Cody Stauffer-MacDowell really shined at No. 3 doubles.”
The Phoenix’s victory sets up a showdown for first place in the Southern Conference standings when No. 73 Furman (9-10 overall, 5-0 SoCon) visits the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center at 1 p.m. Saturday. Davidson heads to Greenville, S.C. for a neutral-site match against South Carolina State at noon Saturday.
Furman 7, Appalachian State 0
GREENVILLE, S.C. ? The Furman men’s tennis team improved to 9-10 on the season and remains atop the Southern Conference with a 5-0 league record with a 7-0 win over Appalachian State on Wednesday.
The Paladins took the early lead with three wins in doubles. In the top spot, the team of Andy Juc and Chris Motes defeated Bobby Lake and Trent Constance 8-5. At number two doubles, the Paladin tandem of Bo Ladyman and Jordan Walters topped Peter Jacobs and Lee Floyd 8-4, while Jason Basile and Daniel Knause won over Ryan Brookshaw and Dave Doverspike 8-3 at the number three doubles spot.
Furman finished off the win by earning victories in straight sets in all six singles spot.
Appalachian State falls to 9-7 on the season and 2-3 in league play. The Paladins will travel to Elon on Saturday.

The Citadel 4, College of Charleston 3
Charleston, S.C. ? The Citadel Bulldog tennis team defeated the College of Charleston for the first time since 1990, Wednesday afternoon at the Patriots Point Tennis Center, 4-3. This is the first ever Southern Conference victory for the Bulldogs over the Cougars since they entered the conference in 1998.
The Citadel struck first to claim the doubles point with wins at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles. James Eason and Alberto Diaz defeated Jimmy Petit and Joe Nicolazzi, 8-4, at No. 2, while Martin King and Frederick Petrilli pulled out the win against Ross Moyer and Christopher Carlton, 8-1, at No. 3 doubles.
The Bulldogs continued on to win at No. 2, No. 3 and No. 4 singles to win the match, 4-3. Yufo Sutantio controlled No. 2 singles (6-0, 6-1), as Eason won No. 3 singles (6-2, 6-1) and Diaz wrapped up the win for the Bulldogs at No. 4 singles (6-4, 6-3).
The Citadel improves to 14-9 (4-3 SoCon) on the season, while College of Charleston slips to 6-14 (1-7 SoCon).

UNCG 2, High Point 5
GREENSBORO, NC ? Andrey Bubnov and Arsel Kumdereli picked up wins in singles action, but a pair of three-set wins by High Point gave the Panthers a 5-2 win in men’s tennis action on Wednesday afternoon.
Bubnov topped Charles Bottoni in three sets, dropping the opener, 6-2, before bouncing back in the second to win 7-6, 7-5 in the tiebreaker. Bubnov then won a 10-point tie-breaker, 10-7, to wrap up the win. Kumdereli had a much easier time, topping Julian Antraygues, 6-3 and 6-4, at No. 2 singles.
However, three-set wins by Henri Mangin and Marco Laslaz at Nos. 3 and 4 singles clinched the win for Panthers.
UNCG returns to action on Thursday when they host Winston-Salem State at 3:30 pm.
