SPARTANBURG, S.C. ? Georgia Southern catcher Jenny Side has been named the Southern Conference softball Player of the Week while College of Charleston’s Terri Mesko has been named the league’s Pitcher of the Week for April 28.

Side collected nine hits and 10 RBI in four games last week, leading Georgia Southern to a 3-1 mark, including a pair of wins at SoCon foe Appalachian State. The sophomore from Loganville, Ga., had a 1.063 slugging percentage while belting two home runs and a pair of doubles. She also scored four times.

Mesko, a sophomore from McDonough, Ga., keyed the Cougars’ doubleheader sweep of league-leading Chattanooga on Saturday as she tossed an eight-inning, one-hit shutout as Charleston prevailed 2-0. After allowing a first inning single, Mesko completely shut down the Lady Mocs by holding them without a hit or walk for the remainder of the contest. The shutout was her fifth of the season and it helped the Cougars to move into second place in the league standings, two games behind Chattanooga.

Other top hitters included College of Charleston’s Kristie Shifflett, Chattanooga’s Lauren Flores, Elon’s Patti Weber, UNC Greensboro’s Mary Greenway and Western Carolina’s Jamie Swank. Among the top pitchers this week were Chattanooga’s Brooke Loudermilk, Georgia Southern’s Melissa Laliberte, UNC Greensboro’s Hannah Angel and Western Carolina’s Lauren Ross.
