Cullowhee, N.C. ?Western Carolina’s women and Appalachian State’s men captured the 2008 Southern Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships on the final day of competition at the Western Carolina Sports Complex in Cullowhee, NC.

 

Western Carolina won its fifth women’s championship with 216 points, first title since 2001. Appalachian State placed second with 189 points and Georgia Southern came in third with 153 points.  Chattanooga finished fourth with 63 points and Elon finished fifth with 59 points.  Davidson, The Citadel, Furman, College of Charleston and UNC Greensboro round out the rest of the field. 

 

Appalachian State’s men’s team captured its 16th Southern Conference Outdoor Track and Field title with 315 points.  Western Carolina came in second with 288 points and The Citadel was third with 67 points with Davidson finishing fourth place with 38 points.  Chattanooga, UNC Greensboro and Furman round out the rest of the field.

 

Appalachian State received three out of the four individual awards, with Wes Kiser winning the Men’s Most Valuable Field Performer and the Most Outstanding Performer.  Kiser accumulated 30 points for his team with wins in the shot put, discus and hammer throw.

 

Phillip Bush of Appalachian State earned Freshmen of the Year Honors with an all-around performance.  He placed seventh in the 200-meters, sixth in the 100-meters, fourth in the 110-meter hurdles and second in the 4x100-meter relay.

 

Western Carolina’s Manteo Mitchell received Most Valuable Track Performer honors.  Mitchell won the 200-meters and the 400-meters, placed second in the 100-meters and was a part of the 4x400-meter relay team that finished first.

 

Western Carolina won two individual awards on the women’s side. Raquel Ramseur earned Most Valuable Track Performer honors and Felicia Paulding was named Freshmen of the year. Appalachian State’s Brittani Williams, received Most Valuable Field Performer and Most Outstanding Performer honors after winning her second individual title the meet.  Williams’s toss of 140-07-feet claimed the discus title and she placed first in the hammer throw and second in the shot put on the first day of competition.

 

The men’s triple jump saw two NCAA Regional qualifying marks by two Appalachian State jumpers.  Joel Gaddy placed first with an NCAA Regional qualifying mark of 15.53-meters (50-11.50-feet) and his teammate Mark Sturgis also earned a NCAA Regional qualifying mark with his jump of 15.10-meters (49-11.50-feet).  Daniel Joseph of Western Carolina came in third with a jump of 14.93-meters (48-11.75-feet).

 

Appalachian State’s Danielle Thorpe won the women’s triple jump with a NCAA regional qualifying mark of 12.59-meters (41-03.75-feet).  Lynndsey Hyter of Georgia Southern placed second with a jump of 12.15-meters (39-10.75-feet) and WCU’s Tia Jones finished third with a jump of 12.95-meters (39-06.50-feet).

 

Western Carolina’s men’s 4x100-meter relay team ran an NCAA Regional qualifying time of 40.26 to win the men’s 4x100-meter relay.  Appalachian State’s placed second with a time of 41.19 and Davidson was third with a time of 43.99.  Western Carolina women’s 4x100-meter relay won the relay with a Southern Conference record and an NCAA Regional qualifying time of 45.68.  Appalachian State placed second and Georgia Southern finished third.

 

The Catamounts swept the men’s and women’s 200-meters.  Mitchell, Zeb Johnson, and Dominique Young all earned NCAA Regional qualifying times.  Mitchell placed first with a time of 21.10, Johnson came in second with a time of 21.18 and Young placed third with a time of 21.32. WCU’s Ramseur won the 200-meters with a NCAA Regional qualifying time of 23.94.  Ramseur was followed by her teammates Felicia Paulding and Sherelle Fronberger.

 

Davidson’s Brenna Burns won her second individual title of the 2008 Southern Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships.  Burns won the 10,000-meters on Saturday and the 5,000-meters in Sunday with a time of 17:40.14.  Burn’s teammate Megal Atias placed third with a time of 18:02.57 and Chattanooga’s Katie Williams came in second with a time of 18:02.27.

 

The Catamounts finished first and second in the men’s decathlon.  David Gift won the decathlon with 6,034 points and his teammate Matt Evans came in second with 5,958 points.  ASU’s Jake Goodchild finished third with 5,892 points.

 

Appalachian State’s Kiara Crutchfield had two balanced days of competition to win the women’s heptathlon.  The Citadel’s Lathcha Sanders placed second with 4,338 points while Melanie Trumbo of Georgia finished third with 4,231 points.
