Furman Wins Women's Golf Title

Hollywood, S.C. ?Furman’s women’s golf team led all three rounds of the 2008 Southern Conference Women’s Golf Championship.  Furman’s Stefanie Kenoyer carded a final round two-under par 70 to win individual medalist honors at the 2008 Southern Conference Women’s Golf Championships presented by Seven Falls Golf and River Club and held at the Links at Stono Ferry.

 

Furman, which led the whole tournament, defeated UNC Greensboro by eight strokes.  Furman won their twelfth Southern Conference women’s golf championship.  Four Furman golfers finished in the top ten which included individual medalist winner Stefanie Kenoyer (218) and Jaclyn Hilea (225).  Blair Lamb (228) and Corrine Carr (230) also finished in the top ten.

 

The Paladins finished with a 303 in the final round and a 901 overall to claim the team title while UNC Greensboro stayed close throughout the final round with a 305 and a 909 overall.  Elon fought off a hard charging College of Charleston to finish third with a final round of 310 and a 926 overall.  College of Charleston finished fourth with a 308 and a 928 overall and Chattanooga, Wofford, Western Carolina, Appalachian State and the Citadel round out the rest of the field.

 

Stefanie Kenoyer of Furman, is only the second freshmen to ever win the Southern Conference Women’s Golf Championship individual title.  Brandy Andersen of Western Carolina accomplished the same feat in 2003.  Kenoyer used three birdies in the last five holes to fend off Elon’s Danielle Mill, by four strokes.

 

Steffi Kirchmayr of College of Charleston, placed third with an even par in final round.  Kirchmayr started tied for seventh and used three birdies to finish the final round tied for third.  Kirchmayr was joined at third place by Chattanooga’s Christine Wolf, who used four birdies to shoot even par for the final round.  Erica Creed of UNG Greensboro and Jaclyn Hilea tied for fifth at nine over par, 228.

 

The league’s coaches also voted on a 10-member all-conference team, highlighted by the league’s player of the year Steffi Kirchmayr of College of Charleston.  Furman’s Jen Hanna won the Coach-of-the-Year Award and Emma de Groot of Chattanooga was named the Freshmen-of-the-Year.
