SPARTANBURG, S.C. ? Furman outfielder Joey Rodgers has been named the Southern Conference baseball Player of the Week while The Citadel’s Wes Wrenn has been named the league’s Pitcher of the Week for April 14.

 

Rodgers was the catalyst at the plate for Furman last week as the Paladins picked up a three-game sweep of the College of Charleston. The senior batted .500 (8-for-16) and drove in 15 RBI in five games as Furman went 4-1 on the week. Rodgers belted a pair of three-run homers and tallied seven RBI in the game one victory over the Cougars, while recording multiple RBI in four of five games played. The Cincinnati, Ohio, native collected 18 total bases while slugging at a 1.125 clip. Rodgers also added three stolen bases and seven runs scored.

 

The Citadel’s Wes Wrenn threw 6.1 innings of no-hit ball on Saturday, recording a 9-1 win over visiting Davidson. Wrenn went 7.0 innings in all, allowing only one run in a masterful performance on the mound. Davidson only scored one run in that time as Wrenn struck out four Wildcats in the win. Wrenn, a junior who hails from High Point, N.C., is the fourth different Bulldog pitcher to earn SoCon Pitcher of the Week honors this season.

 

Other top hitters included Appalachian State’s Isaac Harrow, College of Charleston’s Jeremie Tice, The Citadel’s Sonny Meade, Davidson’s Brett Shore, Elon’s Chase Austin, Georgia Southern’s Griffin Benedict, UNC Greensboro’s Pedro Leon, Western Carolina’s Jason Haynes and Wofford’s Kyle Behrendt. Among the top pitchers this week were Appalachian State’s Josh Dowdy, College of Charleston’s Clay Caulfield, Elon’s Steven Hensley, Furman’s Mason Smith, UNC Greensboro’s Rob Gilliam, Western Carolina’s Tyler Sexton and Wofford’s John Cornely.
