UNC Greensboro 4, Elon 3

 

GREENSBORO, NC ? Three straight-set wins in singles action, including Alejandra Guerra’s 14th straight victory, gave UNC Greensboro a 4-3 win over Elon in Southern Conference women’s tennis action Thursday afternoon.

 

Guerra blasted Deanna Bailey, 6-1 and 6-0, to run her spring record 15-2 on the season and remain unbeaten in SoCon action at 7-0. Erica Zabkar and Valerie Behr also earned straight-set wins in singles and teamed up for an 8-1 win doubles action to cap off the victory.

 

Elon (13-9, 4-4) got third-set wins by Paige Kensrue and Whitney Butcher in singles action.

 

The Spartans (10-9, 4-3) host Western Carolina on Friday at 2:30 pm.

Appalachian State 0, East Carolina 7

 

BOONE, N.C.- The ASU women's tennis team finished the home slate of their 2008 campaign Thursday afternoon, as the Mountaineers lost a tough match to East Carolina 7-0. With the loss, Appalachian drops to 7-12 on the season and the Pirates improve 16-5.

The Mountaineers posted solid efforts in doubles play, but were not able to notch any wins over strong ECU competition.

At the No. 1 doubles position, the team of Laura Janke and Anja Gugger were impressive but were not able to grab a win as they to fell Luiza Borges and Jessica Cook 8-5. Monica Tomas and Heather Prior were over-powered at the No. 2 spot, falling 8-0.

Rounding out doubles action, the duo of Amanda Cash and Lindsay King struggled on the afternoon as well, losing 8-3.

In singles action, Gugger faced a solid opponent in Jessica Cook, but was not able to hold off a late surge, and lost in two sets, 7-6 and 6-1.
Tomas was strong at the No. 2 spot as well, but was not able to over come an early deficit, also falling in two sets, 6-3 and 6-4.

At the No. 3 and No. 4 spots, both Cash and King were not able to get into a groove, both losing to their opponents in two sets.

Capping off the action on the afternoon, at the No. 5 position, Elizabeth Holland lost to Brooke Walter 6-4 and 6-1, while Caroline Mauch lost to Tamara Sachs at the No. 6 spot, 6-3 and 6-3.

The Mountaineers will take a brief break before heading to Charleston, S.C. to compete in the Southern Conference Tournament. The tournament begins April 17 and last through the 20th. Stay logged on to GOASU.com for complete details.
