SPARTANBURG, S.C. ? Appalachian State’s men and Chattanooga’s women hold advantages in the races for the Southern Conference’s Commissioner’s Cup and the Germann Cup, respectively, following the completion of the winter sports season.
In the chase for the Commissioner’s Cup, Appalachian State used a shared North Division title in men’s basketball as well as second place finishes in wrestling and indoor track and field to jump from second place following the fall sports season to holding an 11-point advantage of its nearest competitor. The Mountaineers have 58 points following by second place Chattanooga who has 47 points. The Mocs won the wrestling regular season and tournament championships while also sharing the North Division title with ASU in men’s basketball.
Davidson (40.5 points) jumped up to third place in the Commissioner’s Cup standings on the strength of its regular season and tournament championships in men’s basketball. Furman holds fourth place in the standings with 38.5 points while UNC Greensboro is fifth and The Citadel sixth. Elon sits in seventh place, followed by Wofford, Western Carolina and Georgia Southern. College of Charleston is in 11th and VMI, an associate member in wrestling only, is in 12th place.
Following its regular season and tournament titles in women’s basketball, Chattanooga has jumped to the top of the rankings in the Germann Cup race. The Lady Mocs, who also took home a fourth-place finish in indoor track and field, pace the league with 42.5 points. Davidson (39 points) holds a narrow edge over third-place Appalachian State (38.5 points), and College of Charleston, Western Carolina and Furman are all within 6.5 points from the top spot.
Elon is seventh in the Germann Cup ledger, followed by Georgia Southern in eighth place and UNC Greensboro in ninth. Wofford and The Citadel round out the ratings.
The Commissioner’s and Germann Cups are awarded annually to the Southern Conference schools fielding the league’s best all-around men’s and women’s sports programs. Schools earn points based upon its regular season finish, with two bonus points going to the team that wins the conference tournament.
The Commissioner’s Cup was inaugurated in 1970 and the Germann Cup was first awarded in 1987. The latter is named after former SoCon Commissioner, Ken Germann, who served as commissioner of the Southern Conference from 1974-86 and spearheaded the effort to introduce women’s athletics to the league.
Appalachian State has claimed the Commissioner’s Cup 27 times since entering the SoCon in 1971, winning 15 of the last 16 cups. Chattanooga won the award in 2004-05.
Only three schools have won the Germann Cup with Furman winning 12 straight from 1993 through 2004. Appalachian State won the inaugural cup and College of Charleston garnered the award in 2004-05. ASU has also claimed the Germann Cup in each of the past two seasons.
