LADY MOCS SIX STROKES OFF LEAD AT LARRY NELSON INVITATIONAL
BRASELTON, Ga. ? The Chattanooga women’s golf team is third after two rounds of the inaugural Kennesaw State Larry Nelson Collegiate Invitational at the Chateau Elan Resort 6,000-yard par 71 Chateau Course.
After shooting a first-round 319, the Lady Mocs responded with a second-round low score of 306. Freshman Emma de Groot is third overall at 151, one stroke behind co-leaders Angela Drane (Louisiana-Monroe) and Alex Rankin (Wofford). UTC freshman Christine Wolf is tied for fourth at 152 while sophomore Kayla Stewart is tied for 16th with a two-round score of 157. Sophomore Katie Taylor has a two-round total of 165.
South Alabama holds a two-stroke lead after two rounds at 619 followed by Samford University at 621. The Lady Mocs are third with a two-round score of 625 and Louisiana Monroe is fourth with a team score of 637.
Final round play will get underway Tuesday morning with a shotgun start.
Wofford's freshmen pair in top four after day one
CHATEAU ELAN, Ga. -- Wofford's Alex Rankin and Meredith Few, the two freshmen on this year's Terrier squad, are among the top four players with Rankin tied for first after the first two rounds of the Larry Nelson Collegiate Invitational Monday in Chateau Elan, Ga.
Rankin, who captured her first collegiate tournament title in Wofford's last event, the Gainesville Shootout, continued her stellar play with a 73-77--150 (+8) to tie UL-Monroe's Angela Drane for first among the 88 individuals.
Few is one of three players tied for fourth on the par 71, 6,000-yard course with a 79-73--152 (+10). The Terriers are only one of two schools, along with SoCon foe Chattanooga, to place two individuals among the top 10.
Junior Erin Wells is the next Wofford player in the clubhouse with an 83-79--162 (+20) to tie for 33rd.
Wells' classmate, Colleen Rice, registered an 89-88--177 (+35) to finish 79th, while sophomore Sarah Herbert rounds out the Terrier contingent with a 94-90--184 (+42) to place 82nd.
South Alabama paces the team standings with a two-stroke advantage over Samford.
The two-day, 54-hole event will conclude with the final 18 holes Tuesday.

Western Carolina Women’s Golf Third After First Round at John Kirk / Panther Intercollegiate
Stockbridge, Ga. ? Western Carolina women’s golf stands in third place entering Tuesday’s final round of the 15th annual John Kirk / Panther Intercollegiate after carding an opening round of 312 Monday at the par 73, 6,144-yard Eagle’s Landing Country Club. Battling cold and dizzily conditions, sophomore Elin Mickelsson posted WCU’s best first-round score of three-over, 76, to stand in a five-way tie for eighth place.
The second and final round of the 15-team, 36-hole event will take place on Tuesday with Western’s first golfer teeing off on hole number 10 at 9:42 am.
Tournament host, the 35th-ranked Georgia State Panthers lead the event by eight strokes over second-place Jacksonville State, 300-to-308. Western is in third, four strokes in arrears, followed by No. 51 Mississippi State one stroke back at 313 and No. 43 Augusta State in fifth two back at 314.
Individually, Georgia State’s Sandra Maier and Miami’s Jessica Steward shot a one-under, 72, on Monday to stand atop the leader board.
Mickelsson led the Catamounts with a three-over, 76, to stand just inside the top 10 entering the final round. Sophomore Tiffany Schisler, seeing her first team action since playing as an individual last October, fired a career-low round of 78 (40-38) to stand tied for 16th. A native of Nags Head, N.C., Schisler was WCU’s best scorer on par 5 holes, averaging two-under, 4.60 to stand tied for second among all tournament participants.
Freshman Josefine Sundh shot a six-over, 79, to stand tied for 22nd with classmate Katja Dammann. Sundh posted the second-most birdies on the first round (4), while Dammann is tied for the lead in par 3 scoring with an average of one-under, 2.75. Sophomore Desiree Karlsson rounded out WCU’s scorers tied for 30th (80).
Statistically speaking, Western ranks second only to tournament-leader, Georgia State, in two categories including par 3 scoring (3.10, +2) and birdies (12), while ranking tied with the Panthers for the best par 4 scoring at 4.47, +21.
The final round is set for Tuesday morning with tournament tee times beginning at 8:30 am.

Phoenix Opens in 10th at Panther Intercollegiate
STOCKBRIDGE, Ga. ? Danielle Mills logged a five-over-par 78 to pace all Elon golfers as the Phoenix opened the 15-team John Kirk/Panther Intercollegiate women’s golf tournament in 10th place Monday afternoon on the 6,144-yard Eagle’s Landing Country Club course.
Mills followed up her 41 on the front nine holes with a 37 on the back nine to claim a share of 16th place in the 81-player event after first-round action. Miami’s Jessica Steward and host Georgia State’s Sandra Maier each carded a one-under-par 72 to tie for first place in the two-day, two-round, 36-hole tournament.
In addition to Mills, Elon is also being represented by Kelsey Johnson (Tied-30th/80), Samantha Widmer (Tied-49th/82), Taylor Johnson (Tied-64th/85) and Tara McFadden (Tied-66th/86).
Georgia State (300) leads the field entering the final round of play at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday, followed by Jacksonville State (308), Western Carolina (312), Mississippi State (313), Augusta State (314), East Tennessee State (318), Campbell (320), Coastal Carolina (322), Maryland (323), Elon (325), Miami (326), Arkansas-Little Rock (327), Richmond (331), Xavier (332) and Memphis (335).
