Georgia Southern 7, Bowling Green 0
AUBURN, Ala. --- Senior Melissa Laliberte (Cobourg, Ontario, Canada) tossed a complete-game shutout and junior Robyne Siliga (Oceanside, Calif.) went 4-for-4 at the plate to give Georgia Southern a 7-0 victory over Bowling Green Sunday in the finale of the War Eagle Classic.
The win snaps a three-game losing streak for Georgia Southern (17-13) while Bowling Green loses its ninth straight to open the season.
Siliga started her work early, singling home sophomores Lindsey Hopkins (McDonough, Ga.) and Nina Iduate (Norcross, Ga.) in the first inning. She added a second hit in the third with another single and scored on junior Amanda Hall’s (Haddock, Ga.) three-run homer.
Siliga added her third RBI on the afternoon in the fifth by driving in Iduate on another single and made it a perfect afternoon in the seventh on her fourth one-base hit.
Laliberte allowed just four hits and tied her career high with 14 strikeouts. The 14 Ks are tied for third-most in school history. Only one baserunner advanced past second base.
Georgia Southern returns to action Friday when it competes in the Speedline Invitational hosted by South Florida.
Texas Tech 8, College of Charleston 3
Palo Alto, Calif. - After scoring in two consecutive innings, the College of Charleston softball team fell to Texas Tech, 8-3 on the final day of the Stanford Classic Sunday morning.
Charleston opened the scoring in the second inning. Kristie Shifflett singled and Kristi Woodall was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second for the Cougars.
Shannon Howard's two-run homer in the third put the Cougars up 3-0. Tiffany Harmon singled to left-center and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from Terri Mesko. Howard swung on the second pitch, sending the ball out of the park. The homerun was her second in the tournament and third of the season.
CofC lost the lead when the Red Raiders responded by scoring eight runs in the three following innings.
Howard (5-7) pitched a complete game, striking out two TTU batters and allowing eight earned runs. Sarah Losleben was credited with the win after relieving of Alex Watkins. Losleben (2-3) pitched through five innings and struck out four batters with two earned runs.
The Cougars face the host Cardinal in their final game of the weekend at noon, pacific daylight time.
Stanford 5, College of Charleston 0
Palo Alto, Calif. -- Five fifth-inning runs pushed ninth-ranked Stanford over the College of Charleston, 5-0 in the final of the Stanford softball Classic from Smith Family Stadium Sunday afternoon.
The Cougars finish the weekend 0-6 and fall to 9-19 overall. The Cardinal improve to 27-2 overall.
Kristie Shifflett had the Cougars lone hit on the day when she smacked a single to right in the top of the seventh.
Terri Mesko (3-8) pitched through seven innings with three strikeouts and five earned runs. Missy Penna (17-2) a complete game. She struck out four batters.
Charleston returns home to host the CofC Classic Friday, March 14-Sunday, March 16.
Connecticut 7, Appalachian State 0
Connecticut 8, Appalachian State 0
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Day two at the FSU Invitational was not any kinder than the first for the Appalachian State softball team, who dropped a pair of games to Connecticut on Sunday afternoon, 7-0 and 8-0. Appalachian falls to 1-16 on the season and is in the midst of a ten-game losing skid.
In game one, Appalachian was stymied by the Husky pitching staff that held the Apps to only three hits. Junior leadoff hitter Andrea McIntyre provided two-thirds of the Mountaineer offense with two hits on three at bats. The other Appalachian hit came off the bat of junior centerfielder Ashley Gaston in the second inning.
Junior Kayla Richardson started the game on the rubber for the Mountaineers. She pitched all six innings allowing seven runs, four earned off fourteen hits. She struck out one and walked three on the day. As the losing pitcher, her record falls to 1-6.
The Mountaineer defense accounted for two errors on the game.
Game two was much of the same for both teams. Connecticut scored one more run on five fewer hits while ASU had three hits and two doubles in the game as the Mountaineers fell, 8-0 in six innings.
Junior Yancy Moose started in the circle, dealing for two and two-thirds innings. She allowed six runs, three earned off eight hits in the loss, dropping her to 0-6 on the season. She was relieved by junior Teri Fister with two gone in the third. Fister stopped the bleeding for ASU, throwing two and a third innings of perfect softball, recording seven consecutive outs. However, an error followed by a walk and a double to start the sixth scored the final runs for the Huskies and ended the game due to the eight-run rule.
McIntyre matched her success from the first game, batting two-for-three with a double to complete her Tallahassee homecoming. Freshman Katie Boyd had ASU’s third hit in the game, a double to left in the first inning.
Appalachian will now return home to the High Country for the 2008 home opener against Florida Gulf Coast. The Apps take on the Eagles on Friday, March 14 at 11 a.m.
