Elon 10, Furman 2

GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Bennett Davis homered twice and drove in three runs to power Elon to a 10-2 win over Furman in Southern Conference baseball action Sunday afternoon at Furman Stadium.

With the victory Elon (22-6, 7-2 SoCon) completes the three-game series sweep of Furman (12-11, 1-5 SoCon), which has dropped five of its last six games.

Davis, who also scored three runs, homered in the first inning to give Elon a 1-0 lead and tacked on a two-run clout in the ninth to account for the Phoenix's final two runs. Donny Jones also had two of Elon's nine hits and scored three times.

Daniel Britt (2-1) earned the win after working six innings and allowing four hits, two runs, and three walks. He struck out five.

The losing pitcher was Kevin Gaid (0-1), who went 6 2/3 innings and surrendered four hits, seven runs, just four of which were earned. He walked six and struck out five.

Campbell Lewis led Furman's tame seven-hit attack with two hits, and Bobby Hubbard drove in both Paladin runs. The Paladins also commited three errors, which led to four unearned runs.

Davis's solo home run to center field in the top of the first gave Elon a 1-0 lead, but Furman tied the game in the bottom of the frame after Marcus Rose reached on an error, advanced to second on a groundout, stole third before coming home on a Bobby Hubbard RBI grounder.

Elon scored three times in the third on just one hit and pair of Furman errors. Harry Austin walked

to lead off and moved to second on a balk. After Chris Dove struck out, Donny Jobe's chopper over Gaid's head went under the glove of charging Paladin second baseman Marcus Rose and into center field, allowing Austin to score. Jobe then stole second and with two outs came around to score on a Ryan Adams single that got past Paladin center fielder Joey Rodgers. Adams, who moved around to third on the error, later scored on a wild pitch to give Elon a 4-1 lead.

Furman made it a 4-2 game in the fifth on another RBI grounder by Bobby Hubbard.

The Paladins loaded the bases in the sixth with a hit, a walk, and a hit batsman, but Britt recovered by striking out Rose to end the threat.

Elon blew the game open in the seventh with four runs, highlighted by a pinch-hit home run to left field by Greg Annarummo.

Furman threatened again in the seventh when Connor Lind singled to lead off and Ryan Lee followed with a one-out base hit. Campbell Lewis then drilled a ball into the right center field that Phoenix outfielders Chris Dove and Cory Harrilchak attempted but failed to snag with diving attempts. In a moment of indecision as to whether the catch had been made, Lewis passed Lee in the base path between first and second and was called out, and Reese Wade bounced into a fielder's choice ground out to end the inning.

Furman returns to action on Tuesday when it travels to Clinton, S.C., to take on Presbyterian in a 3:00 p.m. game. The contest will mark the Paladins' first clash against the Blue Hose in Clinton since 1964.
