DAVIDSON MAKES HISTORIC RUN IN NCAA MENS'S BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT
After playing 20 conference games, taking on top-ranked teams such as Duke and North Carolina...and winning the Southern Conference Basketball Championship, the Davidson Wildcats earned the automatic bid to the NCAA Men's Basketball Championship.
And danced their way to the Elite Eight.
The Wildcats streak ended in Detroit with a two-point, 59-57 loss to Kansas, who received a #1 seeding in the tournament. Kansas advanced to the Final Four and will take on North Carolina, another #1 seed and one of Davidson's opponents last season. Davidson advanced to the Elite Eight with a 73-56 win over Wisconsin on Friday, March 28 from Ford Field in Detroit, Mich. The Wildcats advanced to the Sweet Sixteen with a first-round win over Gonzaga and by topping Georgetown in the second round. Davidson is riding the longest win streak in the nation at 25 straight.
The Wildcats were no strangers to the Elite Eight...but none of the current players were even a glimpse in the Davidson program the last time it happened. The first team to advance to the NCAA Sweet Sixteen was West Virginia in 1957, back when the tournament ranged from 22 to 25 teams in the bracket. The Mountaineers would advance again in 1960 and 1963. Davidson made its first appearance in 1966 and advanced to the Elite Eight in 1968 and 1969. Furman advanced to the final 16 in 1974. Former SoCon member VMI advanced to the Elite Eight in 1976, the last SoCon school to be among the final eight. The Keydets also went to the Sweet 16 in 1977. Chattanooga was the last SoCon team in the Sweet Sixteen, taking on Providence in 1997.
NOTE: The numbers used only include teams who advanced to the round of 16 and does not include teams prior to 1953 when only 16 teams were included.
