SPARTANBURG, S.C. ?The Southern Conference’s track & field coaches selected Manteo Mitchell and Matt Evans of Western Carolina as the Men’s Co-Track & Field Athletes of the Week.
Mitchell, a junior from Mooresboro, N.C., qualified for the NCAA regional in two events, the 200-meters and the 400-meters at the Charlotte 49er Classic. Mitchell won the 400-meters with a time of 47.02 after running a 46.92 in the preliminaries. Mitchell’s time of 20.94 in the 200-meters was also a NCAA regional qualifying time. Mitchell was the lead-off for both the 4x100-meter relay team and the 4x400-meter relay team. The relay teams both ran NCAA regional qualifying times. The 4x100-meter team ran 40.56 and the 4x400-meter relay team ran 3:09.75. Mitchell has the fastest time in the Southern Conference in the 200-meters and the 400-meters.
Evans, a sophomore from Marion, N.C., qualified for the NCAA regional meet in two events at the Charlotte 49er Classic. Evans mark of 6-10 ? -feet in the high jump qualified him for the regional as well as his javelin throw of 206-10-feet also qualified him for the regional. Evans’ javelin throw was a new school record. Evans leads the Southern Conference in both of these events.

AJ Savoia, a freshman from UNC Greensboro placed seventh in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the Wake Forest Open. Savoia’s time of 9:33.99 broke the UNC Greensboro school record by nine seconds and qualified him to compete in the USATF Junior Nationals this June in Columbus, Ohio.
Josh Shumaker, a junior at Wofford broke his previous best in the 5,000-meters by 2:22 with a time of 15:48.37 at the Charlotte 49er Classic. Shumaker finished 14th overall and broke Wofford’s nine-year old school record by seven seconds.
