ASU and UTC Pick Up Wins in Women's Tennis Action

Appalachian State 4, UNC Asheville 3

BOONE, N.C.- The Appalachian women's tennis squad notched a win over UNC Asheville Wednesday afternoon, as the Mountaineers defeated the Bulldogs 4-3. With the win, ASU improves to 6-9 on the season, while UNCA falls to 5-7.

The match got off to a somewhat rocky start, as the Apps were unable to win the crucial doubles point, grabbing a win in just one of the three matches.

The duo of Monica Tomas and Mallory Cook fell at the No. 1 doubles spot to Leslie Smith and Stephanie Schon, losing 8-3. The duo of Holland and Gugger struggled in doubles play as well, as they lost 8-0. Amanda Cash and Lindsay King finished doubles action on a strong note, as they won at the No. 3 spot, defeating Whitney Abbott and Tania Mateva 8-2.

The Apps posted solid performances in singles play, as four Mountaineers notched wins on the afternoon.

At the No. 1 singles spot, Gugger easily defeated her opponent in two sets, winning 6-2 and 6-2. Tomas was also successful, as she beat Louise Bottomley in two sets, winning 6-3 and 6-0.

Cash faced very strong competition in Stephanie Schon at the No. 3 spot, as she lost in a heartbreaker, falling in three sets, 6-2, 4-6 and 5-7.
Holland fell to her oponnent as well at the No. 4 position, losing 6-1 and 6-4.

Capping off the match, both King and Caroline Mauch grabbed wins at the No. 5 and No. 6 spots, both defeating their opponents in two sets.

ASU will return to action Saturday March 29, as the Mountaineers host Charlotte at 2:30 p.m. The match will take place at the Rivers Street Tennis Courts.

 

Elon 2, Georgia State 5

 

ATLANTA, Ga. ? Georgia State dropped the doubles point but bounced back to capture five singles matches, dealing Elon a 5-2 non-conference women’s tennis setback ? its first loss in four matches ? Wednesday afternoon at the Piedmont Tennis Center.

The Phoenix (12-7) secured the doubles point when Deanna Bailey and Anna Milian defeated Martina Nitkova and Katerina Gresova 8-5 at No. 1 while Jennifer Tucci and Hayley Wahl beat Rachel Malina and Kiera Strickland 8-5 at No. 3.

The Panthers (7-9) registered a win at No. 2 doubles when Dariana Kozmina and Kiara Powell stopped Paige Kensrue and Whitney Butcher 8-4. Georgia State improved to 5-1 at home on the season after reeling off the contest’s first five singles victories.

Kozmina (over Bailey 6-2, 6-4 at No. 1), Malina (over Kensrue 6-2, 6-2 at No. 3), Powell (over Laura Graybill 6-0, 6-2 at No. 4), Gresova (over Wahl 6-2, 6-0 at No. 5) and Strickland (over Jessica Margolis 6-3, 6-2 at No. 6) all won for the Panthers. Elon posted a victory at No. 2 when Milian overcame Nitkova 6-3, 1-6, 6-4.

Georgia State visits UNC Wilmington at 11 a.m. Saturday. West Virginia visits the Phoenix at 2 p.m. Monday at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center.

 

Chattanooga 7, Austin Peay 0

 

The women’s tennis team won its second consecutive match and ran its home-court record to 5-3 Wednesday with a 7-0 shutout of Austin Peay State.

 

The Lady Mocs, now 7-8 overall, swept the doubles matches and did not lose a set in single competition to complete the shutout.

 

The Governors, 0-10, won four or more games in just two sets as Chattanooga produced three 6-0 sets and won two matches with 6-0, 6-1 scores.

 

Senior Lindsey Ballard claimed her team-best 10th singles win with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Mariana Pagan at No. 1 singles.  Freshman Grace Robinette battled back from a 5-1 deficit in the second set for a 6-2, 7-5 win at No. 2 over Michelle Liew, and senior Bonnie Adams registered a 7-5, 6-0 win over Morgan Klieber at the No. 3 spot.

 

Junior Beata Knizat and freshman Annie Green won their respective singles matches at No. 4 and No. 5 by identical 6-0, 6-1 scores.  Sophomore Kate Ksiezopolski defeated Mary Beth Lefler, 6-3, 6-2 at No. 6.

 

Chattanooga hits the road this weekend, visiting High Point Saturday for its third straight non-conference match then take on UNC Greensboro Sunday at noon in Greensboro, N.C., in a Southern Conference matchup.
