BOONE, N.C.- The Appalachian men's tennis team played two impressive matches Wednesday morning and afternoon, as the Mountaineers notched wins over Lees McRae, winning 7-0 and UNC Asheville, winning 6-1. With the two victories, ASU improves to 9-5 on the season, while both Lees-McRae and UNC Asheville fall to 7-8 overall.
During the first match of the day against Lees McRae, the Apps took an early advantage and never looked back, downing the Bobcats 7-0.
In doubles action, the duo of Bobby Lake and Lee Floyd defeated their opponent 8-6 at the No. 1 spot, while Peter Jacobs and Ryan Brookshaw were also successful, easily winning 8-0 at the No. 2 position. Rounding out doubles play, David Doverspike and Britton Webb fell just short as they dropped a close match at the No. 3 position, losing 8-7.
Every Mountaineer posted solid performances in singles play, as all were able to notch wins for ASU.
Brookshaw led the way at the No. 1 position, as he downed his competition 6-2 and 6-4, while Lake followed suit, winning at the No. 2 spot in three sets, 6-2, 7-5 and 6-0.
Floyd's match came down to the wire, as he faced a strong opponent in Shaun Sumner, narrowly winning in three sets, 6-7, 7-5 and 10-6. Capping off doubles action, Jacobs, Doverspike and Webb were all able to pick up wins for Appalachian at the No. 4, No. 5 and No. 6 spots, as each defeated their opponents in two sets.
In the second match of the day against UNC Asheville, the Mountaineers came out strong again, as they defeated the Bulldogs 6-1.
All Mountaineer doubles teams were able to grab wins against UNCA, as the duo of Lake and Constance were victorious at the No. 1 spot, defeating Mauricio Correa and Joseph May 8-7. At the No. 2 position, Jacobs and Floyd handily beat their opponents 8-1, while Brookshaw and Doverspike finished off doubles play on a strong note, winning 8-5.
In singles action, Lake faced a challenging opponent in Correa, as he lost in two close sets, falling 7-5 and 6-4. At the No. 2 spot, Brookshaw was impressive, as he defeated Tyler Begg in two sets, winning 6-4 and 6-3.
Both Constance and Floyd were victorious at the No. 3 and No. 4 positions against their opponents, as they both won in two sets.
Rounding out the match, both Jacobs and Doverspike notched wins for ASU as well, as Jacobs won at the No. 5 spot, 6-3 and 6-3 and Doverspike grabbed a win at the No. 6 spot, winning 6-2 and 6-0.
The Apps will not have much time to rest, as they travel to Chattanooga, Tenn. to face UTC on Friday March 28. The match is scheduled to begin at 2:30 p.m.
Furman 6, The Citadel 1
GREENVILLE, S.C. - The Furman men's tennis team improved to 6-10 on the season and 2-0 in Southern Conference play with a 6-1 win over The Citadel on Wednesday.
The Bulldogs won the hard-fought doubles point, with wins at the number two and three spots. At number two doubles, the team of Daniel Dossetor and Yufo Sutantio topped Andy Juc and Andrei Chvetsov 9-8, while Martin King and Frederic Petrilli defeated Chris Rhyne and Jason Basile by the same score. At the number one spot, Bo Ladyman and Chris Motes earned a win for the Paladins with a 9-8 victory over Alberto Diaz and James Eason.
Down 0-1 to start the match, the Paladins rebounded to win all six singles matches, beginning with freshman Sawyer Duncan's 6-0, 6-1 win over Frederic Petrilli in the number six spot. Junior Andy Juc also won in straight sets, with a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Daniel Dossetor in the top singles spot, while Chris Motes and Jordan Walters both picked up straight set victories as well, playing in the number four and five spots respectively.
With the win, Furman improves to 6-10 overall and 2-0 in the Southern Conference, while The Citadel falls to 11-9 and 3-3 in league play. Furman will take the court again on Saturday when the Paladins host the College of Charleston at 1:00 p.m.
Elon 5, South Carolina State 2
ORANGEBURG, S.C. ? Mason Schermerhorn topped Dmitry Lomakin 6-1, 6-2 at No. 3 singles, pacing Elon to a 5-2 non-league men’s tennis triumph over South Carolina State Wednesday afternoon at the SCSU Tennis Facility.
“Mason continues to be our most consistent player up to this point of the season,” Phoenix coach Michael Leonard said. “As our lone senior, he provides our team with the leadership that it needs.”
Elon (12-6) claimed the doubles point when Damon Gooch and Philip Nemec defeated Radek Pivonka and Gabriel Meana 8-5 at No. 1 and Schermerhorn and Alberto Rojas turned back Ivan Milivojevic and Tamas Dobrotka 8-3 at No. 2.
The Bulldogs (11-2) emerged victorious at No. 3 doubles when their duo of David Grund and Jan Langer upended Chase Helpingstine and Cody Stauffer-MacDowell 8-4.
In addition to Schermerhorn, the Phoenix received singles victories from Oscar Podlewski (over Pivonka 6-3, 6-4 at No. 2), Nemec (over Grund 6-3 6-0 at No. 5) and Helpingstine (over Dobrotka 6-4, 6-3 at No. 6). Milivojevic (over Gooch 6-3, 6-4 at No. 1) and Meana (over Rojas 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 at No. 4) won for South Carolina State.
