MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. ? Elon came away with two doubles matches and five singles bouts to seize a 6-1 Southern Conference men’s tennis victory over the College of Charleston Tuesday afternoon at the CofC Tennis Center at Patriots Point, halting the Phoenix’s first three-match losing streak in three seasons.
The Cougars (6-11 overall, 1-4 SoCon) picked up a win at No. 1 singles when Omer Abramovich defeated Damon Gooch 6-2, 6-4. Charleston also prevailed at No. 1 doubles when Abramovich and Steven Myers nipped Gooch and Philip Nemec 8-7.
Oscar Podlewski (over Mickael Boyer 6-1, 6-1 at No. 2), Mason Schermerhorn (over Myers 6-2, 6-0 at No. 3), Alberto Rojas (over Joe Nicolazzi 6-2, 6-0 at No. 4), Nemec (over Ross Moyer 6-3, 6-4 at No. 5) and Chase Helpingstine (over Garrett Egan 6-1, 6-1 at No. 6) all claimed singles success for the two-time defending SoCon champion Phoenix (11-6 overall, 6-1 SoCon).
Elon secured the doubles point when Schermerhorn and Rojas foiled Nicolazzi and Jimmy Petit 8-5 at No. 2 and Helpingstine and Cody Stauffer-MacDowell topped Moyer and Don Murray 8-5 at No. 3.
The Phoenix will visit South Carolina State at 2 p.m. Wednesday and the Cougars will visit Furman at 1 p.m. Saturday.
Davidson 7, Coastal Carolina 0
DAVIDSON, N.C. Ranked for the first time in school history, the No. 75 Davidson men's tennis team kept the winning ways going by sweeping all six singles spots on their way to a 7-0 victory against Coastal Carolina on Tuesday afternoon.
The Wildcats made it two straight to run their overall record to 10-4 and their home mark at Covington Tennis Courts to 7-1. The 'Cats are ranked No.75 in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) poll as of Monday, Mar. 24. Coastal Carolina, who is on four-match road swing, fell to 7-10 on the year.
Winning for the fourth time in the past five matches, and eighth time in the last 10, Davidson dropped just one match (No. 1 doubles) in taking the 7-0 win.
For the third straight match, the sophomore duo of Eric Noble (Fayetteville,N.C.) and Sam Burns (Banner Elk, N.C.) won as a team with an 8-3 win at No.2, and senior Phillip Compeau (Wilkesboro, N.C.) and junior Scott Myers (West Palm Beach, Fla.) closed out the doubles point with an 8-5 victory at No. 3.
Then Noble, Burns and Myers carried the winning momentum into singles action and each prevailed at the No. 2,4, and 5 spots with straight set wins. Noble and Burns picked up their sixth and seventh wins, respectively, with victories of 7-5, 6-1 and 6-4, 6-1 at No. 2 and 4.
Myers, riding a four-match win streak, need an extra game in his first set to pick up a 7-5 win over Carlo Checchia, before closing out his fifth straight triumph and team-leading 12th singles win with a 6-1 decision in the second set.
Senior Flaviu Simihaian (Nasaud, Romania) pushed his overall singles mark to 7-6 with his second win in a row, a 6-2, 6-4 victory at No. 1 over Dmitry Vlaskin.
Junior Ethan Jaffee (Indianapolis, Ind.) returned to the lineup after missing the previous match to take home a 7-5, 6-1 win at No. 2, and then freshman Arie Hefter (Birmingham, Ala.), playing in his second straight match, scored a 6-0, 6-1 victory at No. 6 to close out the win for the 'Cats and push his career singles win total to three.
With the six singles wins, Davidson as a team is now 49-35 overall in singles play, including 13-10 in Southern Conference play.
Davidson continues its homestand with a SoCon match against UNC Greensboro on Thursday, Mar. 27 at 2 p.m. The Wildcats are in the midst of four matches in a six-day span.
