Elon Defeats Mercer 5-2 in Non-Conference Action

MARIETTA, Ga. ? Deanna Bailey, Anna Milian, Paige Kensrue and Jennifer Tucci all emerged victorious in both singles and doubles action as Elon hung a 5-2 non-conference women’s tennis defeat on Mercer Monday afternoon at the Universal Tennis Academy.

Bailey beat Anna Wieslander 6-2, 6-2 at No. 1, Milian mashed Irys Citko 6-0, 6-1 at No. 2, Kensrue knocked off Cali Sachs 6-1, 6-1 at No. 3 and Tucci toppled Karen Bellman 6-1, 6-0 at No. 4 as the Phoenix (12-6) won for the third time in as many matches. The Bears (8-9) registered singles wins by Amalia Bugge (over Laura Graybill 6-7(3), 6-3, 10-7 at No. 5) and Kelly Blount (over Whitney Butcher 6-3, 6-2 at No. 6).

Elon took early control of the contest by sweeping the doubles bouts. Bailey and Anna Milian outlasted Wieslander and Priscilla Dias 9-7 at No. 1, Kensrue and Butcher blanked Bugge Sachs 8-0 at No. 2 and Tucci and Hayley Wahl held off Bellman and Blount 8-6 at No. 3.

The Phoenix will battle Georgia State at 1 p.m. Wednesday and Mercer will visit Stetson Thursday.

 

UNCG 3, UNC Wilmington 4

 

GREENSBORO, NC ? UNC Greensboro’s Alejandra Guerra earned her eighth straight win, but UNC Wilmington squeaked past UNCG, 4-3, in women’s tennis action Monday afternoon.

 

Kayla Schwenk’s win at No. 2 singles broke a 3-3 tie to give the Seahawks the match. UNCG’s Arielle VonStrolley had won the opening set, 6-1, before Schwenk won the second set by a 6-3 score. VonStrolley was up 4-3 in the third before Schwenk won the last three games to win the match and give UNCW (12-6-1) the victory.

 

Guerra, a junior from Tampico, Mexico, raised her record to 9-2 on the spring season by sweeping Priscilla Roberts, 6-0 and 6-1. Roberts came into play on Monday with a 12-4 mark on the season, including 9-4 at No. 1 singles.

 

After earning the doubles point by winning two of the three pro-sets, UNCG also got a win in singles action by Erica Zabkar. The senior from Atlanta, GA rallied after losing the first set, 6-4, to win the last two sets by identical 6-1 scores. But UNCW won the other four singles matches, capped off by Schwenk’s come-from-behind win, to win the match.

 

UNCG (4-7) visits Appalachian State in a Southern Conference match on Tuesday at 2:30 pm.
