SPARTANBURG, S.C. ? Elon’s Melanie Helterbran has been named the Southern Conference softball Player of the Week while Chattanooga’s Brooke Loudermilk has been named the league’s Pitcher of the Week for March 24.
Helterbran hit .636 (7-of-11) last week while pounding out two home runs and six RBIs. The junior from Sewell, N.J., collected at least two hits in all three games against Western Carolina as the Phoenix earned a sweep in their first SoCon action of the season. Helterbran also added a double and four runs scored.
Loudermilk was 2-0 in the circle last week as Chattanooga improved to 3-0 in league play with a sweep of UNC Greensboro. In the series opener, the Locust Grove, Ga., native struck out the first eight batters en route to a 15 strikeout, three-hit performance. Loudermilk followed up the complete game in game one with a victory in game two after striking out one in two-thirds of an inning of work.
Other top hitters included Chattanooga’s Katie Blevins, College of Charleston’s Kristie Shifflett, Georgia Southern’s Robyne Siliga and Western Carolina’s Mollie Fowler. Among the top pitchers this week were College of Charleston’s Terri Mesko, Elon’s Pam DelPizzo and Georgia Southern’s Megen Smith.
