SPARTANBURG, S.C. ? Elon captain Jennifer Tucci ousted Cayley Wetzig 6-3, 6-2 at No. 4 singles, clinching a 5-2 Southern Conference women’s tennis triumph for the Phoenix over Wofford ? snapping the Terriers’ seven-match winning streak ? Saturday afternoon at the Reeves Tennis Center.

“Our girls competed with a lot of intensity and showed a lot of heart today,” Elon coach Elizabeth Anderson said. “It’s great to win a conference match on the road. We keep getting better and better with each match we play in both singles and doubles. Wofford was very tough today.”
The Terriers (10-2 overall, 2-1 SoCon) picked up a pair of singles wins when Haley Baird dispatched Whitney Butcher 6-0, 6-3 at No. 5 and Sonia Anand overcame Hayley Wahl 6-7(11), 6-0, 10-5 at No. 6, but were unable to avoid their first conference setback of the season.

“Elon came out today and played to win,” Wofford coach Katie Hangstefer said. “They fought hard and played strong. It is always disappointing to lose, especially conference matches. We just couldn’t come through when we needed to today.”
The Phoenix will make the second stop of its three-match road trip when it faces Mercer in Marietta, Ga., at 10 a.m. Monday. The Terriers will return to action with an 11 a.m. contest at SoCon foe Western Carolina next Saturday.
