Link Leskosky and Anna Lee Evans cruised to wins in singles competition as the College of Charleston women's tennis team opened the Southern Conference portion of its schedule with a 7-0 over Western Carolina at the Patriots Point Tennis Center on
Saturday.
Charleston, which improved to 8-1 overall and 1-0 in league play, plays host to Charlotte at 10:00 a.m. on Sunday. Western Carolina is 0-6 and 0-1.
Leskosky beat Mariona Trilla 6-0, 6-0 at No. 3 singles, while Evans downed Emily Turke 6-0, 6-0 at No. 5 singles. Chelsea Albertz defeated Tessie Salame 6-4, 6-1 at No. 1 singles, Laura Borza earned a 6-0, 6-2 win over Trish Hanson at No. 2 singles, Holly Dowse beat Susanna Sjokuist 6-1, 6-0 at No. 4 singles and Amanda Becker grabbed a 6-1, 6-0 win over Heather Bell at No. 6 singles.
In the nightcap, Charleston rallied for a 4-3 win over Samford winning four of six singles matches.
Chelsea Albertz won at No. 1 singles 3-6, 6-2, 7-5 over Anna Jackson, Holly Dowse beat Taylor Morgan 7-5, 7-6 at No. 2 singles, Amanda Becker earned a 7-6, 6-2 win at No. 5 singles and Keely Mulligan claimed a win at No. 6 singles 2-6, 6-1, 6-2.
Elon 7, Chattanooga 0
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. ? Elon emerged victorious from two of the three doubles bouts and then swept its way through the singles flights to claim a 7-0 Southern Conference women’s tennis triumph at Chattanooga to open league play Saturday afternoon at the Champion’s Club.
The Phoenix (7-4 overall, 1-0 SoCon) ? fourth-place finisher in the 10-team conference in 2007 ? slipped past the Lady Mocs (4-5 overall, 0-2 SoCon) by a 4-3 margin at Elon last year after earning a 5-2 win at Chattanooga the previous season.
Elon’s Jennifer Tucci and Hayley Wahl blanked Arianna Sanjines and Kate Ksiezopolski 8-0 at No. 3 doubles for the first completed match of the day. Chattanooga’s Beata Knizat and Bonnie Adams upended Paige Kensrue and Whitney Butcher 8-3 at No. 2 before Deanna Bailey and Anna Milian ousted Lindsey Ballard and Grace Robinette 8-1 at No. 1 to clinch the doubles point for the Phoenix.
Wahl (over Sanjines 6-0, 6-1 at No. 6), Tucci (over Robinette 6-1, 6-1 at No. 4), Kensrue (over Adams 6-0, 6-2 at No. 3), Milian (over Knizat 6-2, 6-1 at No. 2), Butcher (over Annie Green 6-0, 6-1 at No. 5) and Bailey (over Ballard 3-6, 6-1, 10-7 at No. 1) all posted victories in singles action. Elon’s Laura Graybill and Jessica Margolis won exhibition matches in singles competition.
The Phoenix will now return home to face non-conference foe UNC Wilmington at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center. The Lady Mocs will return to action when Appalachian State visits the Champion’s Club at 1 p.m. next Saturday.
Georgia Southern 6, Western Carolina 1
STATESBORO, Ga. ? The Georgia Southern women’s tennis team opened Southern Conference play on Sunday, downing the Catamounts of Western Carolina (0-6, 0-2 SoCon) by a 6-1 decision at the Hanner Tennis Complex.
The Eagles (5-4, 1-0 SoCon) defeated Western Carolina by the identical score a year ago in Cullowhee, N.C.
GSU picked up the doubles point winning two of the three doubles matches. Freshmen Ali Beavers (Kingsport, Tenn.) and Melanie Rolle (Gainesville, Fla.) notched their eighth consecutive victory, ousting Western Carolina’s pair of Susanna Sjokvist and Emily Turke 8-0 from the No. 2 position. Juniors Jessica Matlosz (Alpharetta, Ga.) and Emma Knight (Duluth, Ga.) improved to (4-0) in doubles play defeating Amanda Massey and Mariona Trilla by a final of 8-1.
Georgia Southern earned wins in five of the six singles matches. Rolle and Beavers both earned their seventh victory of the season, which gives them a tie for the team lead in dual competition. Rolle defeated Trish Hanson from the No. 2 seed in straight sets 6-1, 6-3, while Beavers beat Massey 6-1, 6-1 from the No. 3 slot. Jessica Fuller (Cartersville, Ga.) took down Turke 6-2, 6-1 at the No. 6 position giving her a dual record of 6-2.
“We played really hard today,” said GSU coach Amy Bonner. “I am proud of the way we have battled this season. Today’s match should help increase our confidence level as we head into our next couple of matches.”
GSU returns to the hard-courts tomorrow as they play host to Tennessee Tech. The match is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.

Furman 5, Cal State Northridge 2
NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - The Furman women's tennis team earned a 5-2 win over #69 Cal State Northridge on Saturday, ending the Matadors' five-game winning streak and handing them their first loss of the season.
The Paladins earned the first point of the match with victories at the number one and three doubles spots. The duo of Laura Gioia and Natasa Manojlovic topped Victoria Brymer and Canna Furuta 8-4 at the top spot, while the Paladin tandem of Lauren Tomory and Jessica Preeg defeated Nina Jaworowski and Sandra Kukla 8-6 at the number three spot.
In singles play, Furman earned wins in the top three spots, and Tomory picked up the Paladins' fifth point by winning over Jaworowski 2-6, 6-2, 6-4 in number five singles.
Furman's Gioia earned a quick 6-2, 6-0 win over Brymer in the top singles spot, while Arguello had to work a little harder to defeat Koichumanova 7-6 (7-4), 6-4 in the number two spot. Lauren Osborne defeated Furuta in the third spot 6-3, 6-3 to round out the Paladins' win.
With the win, Furman improves to 6-4 on the season, while Northridge falls to 5-1 overall. The Paladins will return to the east coast to begin Southern Conference play with a trip to Elon on Saturday, March 8.

SPARTANBURG, S.C. ? In dominating fashion, the Wofford women’s tennis team defeated Appalachian State at the Reeves Tennis Center Sunday afternoon in the Terriers’ Southern Conference debut.
Wofford opened the match against the Mountaineers capturing the doubles point, collecting its sixth doubles shutout of the season. At No. 1, seniors Merry Ellen Henry and Laura Lynn Williams defeated Anja Gugger and Mallory Cook 8-1. At the No. 2 position the duo of senior Adriane Hodges and junior Cayley Wetzig did not drop a game in their 8-0 victory over Heather Prior and Monica Tomas. Teammates, freshmen Haley Baird and Sonia Anand beat Appalachian State’s Lindsay King and Amanda Cash at the No. 3 spot claiming an 8-2 victory.
The Terriers controlled the match in singles action, closing the No. 1, 2, 3, 5 and 6 slots with wins in just two sets. At the No. 4 position, down 4-6 after the first set sophomore Sabrina Smyers came back to win the second set 6-3 and eventually the match capturing a 10-8 third set victory.
“Today was a good match,” said coach Katie Hangstefer. “Appalachian played hard. Every team in the Southern Conference is a good team. So starting off with a win today is a good place to be in this conference. We are really starting to come together in doubles. They have been working really hard. I am always proud of our girls and their effort is paying off in wins.”
Wofford will take a break until Monday March 10 when the Terriers will play host to league opponent Georgia Southern at 1:30 p.m. at the Reeves Tennis Center.
