Men's Tournament Pairings Come into Focus

With an 89-69 victory over Georgia Southern in the regular-season finale, Davidson capped a perfect 20-0 season in Southern Conference play and earned the top seed in the upcoming league tournament. Coach Bob McKillop’s team finished the regular-season with a 23-6 overall mark and the Wildcats have won 19 consecutive games.

 

Chattanooga and Appalachian State tied for North Division supremacy. Chattanooga slipped past Elon, 57-56, on March 1 and Appalachian State downed Western Carolina, 74-63. Both teams finished with identical 13-7 conference records and 18-12 overall records. The Mocs earn the second seed in the Southern Conference Tournament. Appalachian State is the fourth seed based on the tie-breaker system.

 

Despite Georgia Southern’s loss to Davidson, the Eagles finish 13-7 in SoCon play with a 20-11 overall record. Coach Jeff Price’s team will enter the tournament as the league’s No. 3 seed. UNC Greensboro will host Western Carolina in the final game of the regular season on Monday, March 3 but the Spartans, 17-11 overall and 11-8 in SoCon play, have wrapped up the fifth seed.

 

The league’s top five seeds earn opening round byes in the Southern Conference Tournament which tips off on Friday, March 7 at the North Charleston (S.C.) Coliseum.

 

With a 77-59 win over Furman on March 1, College of Charleston (14-16, 9-11) earns the sixth seed while Elon (11-18, 9-11) is the tournament’s seventh seed. Wofford (15-15, 8-12), with a 91-77 win over The Citadel on March 1, is the eight seed. Western Carolina (10-19, 6-13), which plays at UNC Greensboro on March 3, is the ninth seed followed by Furman (7-22, 6-14) and The Citadel (6-23, 1-19).

 

Tournament play opens on Friday, March 1 when Western Carolina plays Wofford, Elon takes on Furman and College of Charleston plays The Citadel.
