Appalachian State Defeats Charlotte 5-2

Mt. Pleasant, S.C. -- Stepping on the outdoor courts for the first time this spring, the Drake men's tennis team notched its 33rd consecutive regular season triumph downing the College of Charleston on Monday (March 17), 7-0.

 

Drake extended its ledger with the victory to 13-0 on the campaign, while dropping the Cougars to 6-9 overall.

 

Drake earned the doubles point in the affair for the 12th time this spring as the Bulldogs swept all three contests.

 

Junior Maor Zirkin (Kibutz Hazor, Israel) won his 11th consecutive singles match downing Mickael Boyer, 6-3, 6-1 at top position.

 

Sophomore Bokang Setshogo (Gaborone, Botswana) extended his winning streak to 14 after registering a 6-3, 6-2 win versus Ross Moyer at No. 5.

 

Senior Dalibor Pavic (Adelaide, Australia) added a 6-2, 6-3 victory against Joe Nicolazzi at the second singles hole.

 

Rounding out the win total for the Bulldogs was junior Ricardo Lau (Tegucigalpa, Honduras), freshman Mauricio Ballivian (Santa Cruz, Bolivia) and junior Ivan Mendoza (Wellington, New Zealand) at the Nos. 3, 4 and 6 positions.

Appalachian State 5, Charlotte 2

 

CHARLOTTE, N.C.- The ASU men's tennis team came out strong and defeated a solid Charlotte squad Monday afternoon, winning 5-2. With the win, Apppalachian moves to 5-5 on the season, while the 49ers drop to 8-11 overall.

The match got off to a good start, as the Mountaineers were victorious in all three of their doubles matches, and grabbed the crucial doubles point to help lead them to the win.

At the No.1 doubles spot, the duo of Trent Constance and Bobby Lake defeated their opponents 8-5, while Ryan Brookshaw and Lee Floyd won in a close match, defeating the Bernhoerster brothers 8-7 at the No. 2 position. Rounding out doubles play, the team of David Doverspike and Peter Jacobs were successful as well, winning 8-5.

In singles action, Lake defeated a tough opponent in Felix Bernhoerster at the No.1 spot, winning in three sets 3-6, 6-3 and 6-2. Brookshaw followed Lake's lead, as he grabbed a win over his competition in two sets, winning 6-4 and 6-2.

At the three and four spots for the Apps, Constance fell in two sets, losing 7-5 and 6-1, while Floyd was able to pick up a win against Ricky Cuellar, winning 6-0 and 6-4.

Capping off the match, Peter Jacobs defeated a solid opponent in Mortiz Bernhoerster, winning in three sets, 6-2, 4-6 and 7-5, and David Doverspike fell to his opponent in three sets, losing 1-6, 7-5 and 6-4.

The Mountaineers look to carry their successes as they take on SoCon foe UNC Greensboro at home on Saturday March 22 at 1 p.m.

 

Georgia Southern 1, Pacific 6

 

Stockton, Calif. - The Pacific men's tennis team improved their overall record to 6-7 on the season on Mar. 17, when they defeated Georgia Southern by a score of 6-1

 

In their first victory of the day, the Tigers took all but one of seven team points as they won two of the three doubles matches and five of the six singles contests. Moritz Starke (Bamberg, Germany) and Artem Gramma (Krivoj Rog, Ukraine) earned the Tigers first victory of the day at the No. 1 doubles spot, while David Gonzalez (Guayaquil, Ecuador) and Vegerd Veskimagi (Saka, Estonia) sealed the Tigers second win on the afternoon at the No. 2 doubles position. Starke, Gramma, Gonzalez, Veskimagi, and Renan Delsin (Santa Cruz da Conceicao, Brazil) each won their singles matches in the win.
