Rankin claims Gainesville Shootout medalist honor
GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- Wofford freshman Alex Rankin maintained her two-round lead despite her highest score of the three rounds to capture her first intercollegiate individual title Saturday at the Gainesville Shootout in Gainesville, Fla.
Rankin, who led the field following 36 holes, fired a final round 7-over and withstood a 1-under par 69 from runner-up Ashley Olynick of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi for a 72-68-77--217 (+7) for medalist honors. The Andreson, S.C., native joins teammate Erin Wells as the only Terriers in program history to win an individual title. Wells won the 2007 Diet Coke Wofford Intercollegiate, nearly one year ago, March 5-6 in Spartanburg, S.C.
Rankin's 68 during Friday's second round was the lowest 18-hole score of her career and the tournament. The 69 posted by Olynick was the only other sub-par effort among the 87 individuals, which moved her within three strokes of Rankin.
Wells was the second Wofford player checked into the clubhouse. She tied for 17th following a 21-over par 77-76-78--231.
Rankin's classmate, Meredith Few, tied for 50th after carding an 80-78-87--245 (+35), while Wells' classmate, Colleen Rice, fired an 87-84-79--250 (+40) to tie for 62nd.
Sophomore Sarah Herbert was the final Terrier competing in the event on the par 70, 5,907-yard Mark Bostick Golf Course. She continued to lower her score and tied for 79th after registering a 93-90-85--268 (+58).
Wofford placed seventh out of 15 schools in the team standings. Illinois edged Texas State for the team crown, winning by two shots.
The Terriers will return to the links at the end of the month, March 30-April 1, at the Larry Nelson Collegiate Invitational in Chateau Elan, Ga.
