Rankin slides into first with only sub-par round
GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- Freshman Alex Rankin improved her score by four strokes, firing the only sub-par round of the tournament thus far, to finish the second round in first place and push the Wofford women's golf team into fifth place out of 15 schools Friday at the Gainesville Shootout in Gainesville, Fla.
Rankin, an Anderson, S.C., product, tallied a second-day 68, the lowest 18 hole score of her young career, for an Even par 72-68--140 and five-shot lead over Illinois' Raquel Hopton entering Saturday's final round on the par 70, 5,907-yard Mark Bostick Golf Course.
Junior Erin Wells, an All-Southern Conference selection a year ago, stands just outside the top-10 individuals following a 77-76--153 (+13) to tie for 11th with four others.
Rookie Meredith Few improved by two shots and is tied for 35th with an 80-78--158 (+18), while junior Colleen Rice lowered her score by three strokes with an 87-84--171 (+31) to tie for 68th.
Rounding out the Terrier contingent is sophomore Sarah Herbert. She is in 81st place following a second-day effort seeing her lower her score by three shots to an 93-90--183 (+43).
Wofford improved by 10 strokes overall to move into fifth place in the team standings from a 10th-place showing after day one.
Michigan tops the team leaderboard, hodling a three-shot edge over opening-round leader Texas State.
The three-day, 54-hole event will conclude with the final 18 holes Saturday.

CofC Women's Golf Tied for 12th at LSU
Baton Rouge, La. - Steffi Kirchmayr fired a 75 to lead the College of Charleston women's golf team to a tie for 12th after the first round of the LSU/Cleveland Golf Classic being held Mar. 14-16 at the University Club in Baton Rouge, La. Florida State leads the tournament with a 293. Charleston has a 309 along with Virginia after 18 holes.
For the Cougars, Kirchmayr is tied for 15th with her 75, while Emily Rapp is tied for 23rd with a 76. Joanna Klatten is tied for 38th with a 77 and tied for 72nd is Courtney Brink with her 81. Rounding out the Cougar effort is Fiona Puyo with her 83 to put her tied for 80th.
Round two action starts Saturday morning.
