Wofford Defeats Charlotte 4-3

SPARTANBURG, S.C. ? After losing a 3-0 lead and with Charlotte catching up 3-2, the Wofford women’s tennis team split the final two matches and held on to extend their win streak to seven matches, as the Terriers defeated the 49ers, 4-3, Thursday afternoon at the Reeves Tennis Center.

 

Wofford claimed the doubles point winning all three matches, capturing its seventh doubles sweep of the season. Senior Laura Lynn Williams teamed up with junior Merry Ellen Henry at the No. 1 position and defeated Ana Spivakovsky and Koren Fleming 8-4. At the No. 2 spot, the duo of senior Adriane Hodges and junior Cayley Wetaig beat Yudeshnee Pillay and Candace Cunningham 8-3. Freshmen teammates Haley Baird and Sonia Anand claimed an 8-4 victory over Gabi Vergara and Kimber Redfern.

 

In singles action, Baird competed at the No. 5 position and defeated Cunningham in a dominating performance, 6-0, 6-1.

 

Hodges, the Southern Conference women’s tennis player of the month for February, defeated Pillay at the No. 2 position, 6-2, 4-6, 6-3, securing the match victory for the Terriers.

 

“We all knew that today’s match was going to be a tough one,” said coach Katie Hangstefer. “We came out strong in the beginning by getting the doubles point, but really had to fight hard to hold for the win.  It was great to win this match against such a tough team.”

 

Wofford’s next match will be Wednesday against East Carolina at 2 p.m. at the Reeves Tennis Center.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. ? The Furman women’s tennis team was swept by #9 Vanderbilt in the team’s last non-conference road game of the season.

 

The Commodores took the doubles point with wins at the number two and three spots, while the Paladin tandem of Laura Gioia and Natasa Manojlovic earned Furman’s only win of the day at number one doubles. Gioia and Manojlovic defeated the team of Amanda Taylor and Courtney Ulery by a score of 8-5.

 

Vanderbilt clinched the match by winning in all six singles spots in straight sets. The Commodores improve to 10-3 on the season, while Furman falls to 8-5.

 

The Paladins resume Southern Conference play on March 21 with a trip to Chattanooga.

Western Carolina 3, UNC Asheville 4

 

CULLOWHEE, N.C. ? Western Carolina women’s tennis (3-8) had its three-game winning streak snapped with a 4-3 loss to instate rival UNC Asheville (4-5) Thursday at the Catamount Athletic Complex. The match was part of the Parkway series with UNC Asheville gaining its second point of the series, however, Western Carolina still leads 5-2.

 

The Catamounts opened the match with an early 1-0 lead when the team took the double’s point. Trish Hanson and Tessie Salame won their fourth straight match at No. 1 doubles with a 9-7 victory over Louise Bottomley and Leslie Smith. Western Carolina clinched the doubles point with a win at No. 2 doubles as Amanda Massey and Mariona Jane won 8-4.

 

Western Carolina got wins at No. 1 and No. 2 singles but UNC Asheville picked up victories at singles three through six to secure the 4-3 win. Salame got a big three set win at No. 1 singles defeating Smith 6-3, 4-6, 6-3. It was Salame’s fourth straight victory at No. 1 singles and the second three-set match in her last four matches. Salame currently leads the team with a record of 7-3 on the season.

 

The Catamounts will head back into Southern Conference play when Western Carolina travels to Davidson on March 16. Match time is set for 1 p.m.
