CHARLOTTE, N.C. ? The Wofford men’s tennis team held on to capture a close 4-3 victory over the Charlotte 49ers Wednesday afternoon in Charlotte, N.C.
The Terriers opened the match with the momentum in its favor, as Wofford claimed the doubles point. At the No. 1 position, the duo of senior Andrew Stubbs and sophomore George Kernodle defeated Brad Clinard and Jesse Hutchinson 8-4. At No. 2, senior Richard Cahi and freshman Alan Donald teamed up to beat the Bernhoerster brothers, Felix and Moritz, 8-6.
In singles action, Stubbs picked up a dominating 6-0, 6-3 victory at the No. 1 spot over F. Bernhoerster.
Kernodle and Clinard competed again, this time for a victory at the No. 2 singles slot. Kernodle came out on top for the Terriers, recording a 7-6, 6-4 win.
At the No. 4 position, junior Scott Collins notched a 6-7, 6-0, 6-4 come-from-behind win to secure the match victory for Wofford.
“Going into today’s match, we knew that it would be a close one,” said head coach Rod Ray. “We played well and with enough energy to win the doubles point. Congratulations to Scott Collins for clinching the win for us today. Charlotte is a good team, and they played hard. We were just fortunate enough to get the win.”
The Terriers will play host to league opponent No. 66 ranked Elon University, Sunday at 1 p.m. at the Reeves Tennis Center.

College of Charleston 4, Illinois State 3
Mt. Pleasant, S.C. -- Omer Abramovich and Mickael Boyer captured wins at No. 1 and No. 2 singles leading the College of Charleston to a 4-3 win over Illinois State in men's college tennis action at Patriots Point Tennis Center on Wednesday.
The Cougars, who play host to East Carolina at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, improved to 5-6. The Redbirds fell to 5-4.
Abramovich defeated Luka Marinkovic 6-3, 6-3 at No. 1 singles, while Boyer downed Nuno Jacinto 6-2, 7-5. Ross Moyer downed Michael Hobson 6-3, 6-3 at No. 6 singles. Joe Nicolazzi won at No. 4 singles when ISU's Xavier Riart-Ferrer withdrew with an injury with the match tied at 1-all.
The Citadel 4, Chattanooga 3
CHARLESTON, S.C. --- The Citadel men’s tennis team claimed a 4-3 Southern Conference victory Wednesday over Chattanooga by winning the doubles point and three of six singles matches.
The Bulldogs, who improved to 7-6 overall and 2-2 in the league, swept the three doubles matches to pick up a 1-0 lead.
The Citadel produced victories at No. 1, No. 4 and No. 5 singles to send the Mocs back home with a 4-3 loss.
The Mocs, 10-3 and 1-2, were coming off a big SoCon win over the College of Charleston two days earlier. Chattanooga’s team points came from singles wins at No. 2, No. 3 and No. 6 singles.
Senior Badr Bouabdellah moved down to No. 2 singles and defeated Yufo Sutantio, 6-3, 6-0. Junior Peter Sauska registered a 7-5, 6-4 win over James Eason at No. 3, and No. 6 singles player Robert Diamond, a freshman, was a 6-3, 6-3 winner over Frederic Petrilli.
Chattanooga travels to Knoxville, Tenn., Saturday to take on Tennessee of the Southeastern Conference.

Appalachian State 3, Navy 4
JACKSONVILLE, FLA.- The Appalachian State men's tennis team lost to the defending Patriot League champions Navy Wednesday morning, as the Midshipmen defeated the Apps 4-3. With the loss ASU falls to 4-5 on the season, while Navy improves to 11-5.
The doubles point proved to be crucial, as that was the deciding factor that determined the outcome of the match.
At the No. 1 doubles spot, the duo of Ryan Brookshaw and Lee Floyd lost in a close one to Nate Nelms and Johnny Waters, falling 8-4. Teammates Bobby Lake and David Doverspike were not able to pick up a win either, as they fell to their opponents 8-4 as well. The only doubles pair that grabbed a win on the morning was Peter Jacobs and Trent Constance, who defeated their opponents 8-4 at the No. 2 spot.
In singles action, Lake fell at the No.1 spot in two sets, losing 6-2 and 7-5. Brookshaw tried to help the Mountaineers rally a comeback as he was victorious over Waters, winning 6-1 and 6-1.
Both Constance and Floyd were able to beat their competition as well, as each won in two sets.
Rounding out the match, Jacobs and Doverspike were unable to notch the crucial wins at their respective positions, as Jacobs lost 6-5, 6-3 and Doverspike fell in three sets.
The Mountaineers will take a five-day break before returning to action Monday March 17, , as they travel to Charlotte, N.C. to take on the 49ers. The match is set to begin at 2:30 p.m.
