CofC's Kirchmayr Wins Tournament Medalist Honors

Kirchmayr Leads Cougars to Eighth at Pinehurst Challenge

 

Pinehurst, N.C. - Steffi Kirchmayr fired a tournament-record 69 in the third round to win individual medalist honors and lead the College of Charleston women's golf team to eighth at the Pinehurst Challenge at Pinehurst #8 in Pinehurst, N.C.  East Carolina totaled a 54-hole tournament record 910 to win the event.  Charleston finished the three rounds with a 935.

 

Kirchmayr, who broke the single round record along with Maryland's Kelly Caulkin, totaled a tournament-low and record 217 for the title.  Kirchmayr has now taken at least a share of the individual medalist honors in the last two Cougar tournaments.

 

Courtney Brink tied for 28th with a 233 to follow Kirchmayr.  Fiona Puyo and Emily Rapp both tied for 73rd with a 243 and Kati Scholten totaled a 247 to tie for 90th.

 

Joanna Klatten and Kelly White competed for CofC as individuals with Klatten tying for 23rd with a three-day total of 231.  White tied for 66th with a 242.

 

Charleston travels next to Baton Rouge, Fla., to take part in the LSU/Cleveland Classic Mar. 14-16.

Mylton and DiMora record Top 10 finishes as UNCG finishes fourth at Pinehurst

 

PINEHURST, N.C. ? Ashley Mylton and Gabby DiMora both recorded Top 10 finishes as UNC Greensboro wound up in a tie for fourth at the Pinehurst Challenge on Tuesday.

 

The Spartans carded a team score of 307 on Tuesday to finish at 927, tied with Georgia State and Oregon State. East Carolina won the tournament with a tournament record 910, 10 shots better than East Tennessee State.

 

Mylton shot a 76 and DiMora shot a 78 on Tuesday to both finish tied for 10th place at 229. It was DiMora’s first career Top 10 finish, while Mylton logged her 11th career Top 10 finish. College of Charleston’s Steffi Kirchmayr won the tournament with a tournament record 217, four shots better than second place Emelie Lind of East Carolina.

 

UNCG returns to action on March 28 when it co-hosts the Bryan National Collegiate at Bryan Park GC.

Three Paladins Shoot 75 In UCF Challenge Final Round

 

Sorrento, Fla. -- A trio of Paladins shot three-over-par 75 and Furman posted a third round 307 to finish 18th at the UCF Challenge at the 6,356-yard RedTail Golf Club on Tuesday afternoon.

 

Junior Blair Lamb (65-71-75=220) claimed a 31st place finish to lead Furman after registering 14 pars and a birdie in final round action to card a 75.  Sophomore Ashley Baker shot three-over-par for her best round of the week while recording two birdies and playing the front nine at one-over.  Freshman Jaclyn Hilea (80-79-75=234) also posted a 75 on the strength of three final round birdies.

 

Duke’s Alison Whitaker (65-71-72=208) played Tuesday’s round at even par to claim individual honors just two strokes ahead of second place Junthima Gulyanamitta (72-66-72=210) of Purdue.  The Blue Devils’ Amanda Blumenhurst (69-68-74=211) rounded out the top three to help Whitaker lead Duke (282-282-287=851) to a nine-stroke victory over Purdue (289-283-288=860).

 

The teams in the Challenge, which include 15 of the country’s top 25 teams and 19 of the top 25 individuals, have combined to win 11 national championships.  The medalist from the 2008 UCF Challenge will receive a sponsor’s exemption into the LPGA’s Ginn Tribute Hosted By ANNIKA (May 26-June 1, 2008).

Lady Mocs Seventh at Pinehurst Challenge; de Groot Third

 

PINEHURST, N.C. ? Freshman Emma de Groot carded a 2-over 74 to lead the Lady Mocs to a seventh place finish at the 2008 Pinehurst Challenge hosted by the College of Charleston on Pinehurst #8 a 72-hole par, 5968 yard course.

 

Chattanooga carded a 309 on the final day of the Challenge to finish with a team score of 929. de Groot placed third overall with a three-day total 223. Freshman Christine Wolf who led after the first day, was 10th with a 229.

 

Sophomore Kayla Stewart had a 236 over the three-day event while sophomore Katie Taylor fired a final round 76 to finish with a three round total of 241. Freshman walk-on Milla Junni had a 263 for just her second collegiate tournament.

 

East Carolina posted the lowest tournament 54-hole team record of 910 to win the title. College of Charleston’s Steffi Kirchmayr and Maryland’s Kelly Caulkin fired a tournament record 69 in the final day of competition and Krichmayr had an individual tournament record 217 to win the event. Stetson’s Christine Frazer had a hole-in-one on the No. 5 hole on Tuesday.

 

The Lady Mocs will be back in action at the Sixth Annual Samford University Women’s Intercollegiate at Limestone Springs in Oneonta, Ala., from March 16-18.
