Western Carolina Wins Men’s and Women’s Team Indoor Track and Field Titles
Clemson, S.C.?Western Carolina’s men’s and women’s track and field teams captured the team titles at the 2008 Southern Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships at Clemson University Indoor Track Facility on Saturday afternoon.
The men’s team title came down to the 4x400 relay to decide the winner with Western Carolina edging The Citadel to win the event and the team title. Western Carolina scored 263 points and slipped past Appalachian State by seven and a half points as the Mountaineers scored 256.50 to finish second. Chattanooga came in third with 47 points followed by The Citadel with 38.50 points. Davidson scored 26 points, Furman scored 15 and UNC Greensboro scored eight points to round out the field.
Western Carolina (172 points) outlasted Appalachian State (167 points) also in the relay to win the women’s team title. Georgia Southern came in third with 120 points followed by Chattanooga with 78 points. Elon finished fifth with 35 points and Davidson followed with 32 points. College of Charleston scored 23 points, The Citadel scored 22 points and Furman scored 14 points to round out the field.
Kerrie Savery of Western Carolina, who earned the Most Outstanding Performer and Track Performer, won the women’s mile with a time of 5:04.26 and was also a part of Western Carolina winning distance medley relay team on Friday night. Jennifer Povick of Appalachian State placed second in the event with a time of 5:07.15. Shelly Taylor, the women’s 2008 3,000-meters champion, placed third with a time of 5:07.43.
The heptathlon event started Friday morning with the running of the 60-meters and concluded today with the running of the 1,000-meters. Matt Boruff of Appalachian State topped Sean Reardon of Western Carolina by 260 points with Matt Evans of Western Carolina placing third with a score of 4,426.
The Mountaineers completed a sweep of the men’s weight throw with Wes Kiser winning the event with a throw of 61-00.75. Kiser’s teammates Grant Haun and Timothy Daly placed second and third respectively.
Chattanooga’s Michael Mentz and Josh Houser of Appalachian State battled down the front stretch of the mile with Mentz winning the event with a time of 4:13.99. Josh Houser placed second with a time of 4:14.20 and teammate Brian Deal finished third with a time of 4:14.87.
Appalachian State’s jumpers placed first and third in the triple jump with Joel Gaddy jumping 51’00”, an NCAA provisional qualifying mark. Daniel Joseph of Western Carolina placed second with a jump of 49’7.25” and Mark Sturgis of Appalachian came in third with a jump of 49’2.50”.
In the sprint hurdles, Dominique Price of Elon won the women’s 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.84 followed by ASU’s Porsha Evans-Hardy placing second (9.01) and Nashay McGriff (9.08) of Western Carolina finishing third.
The men’s 60-meter hurdles saw Appalachian State take first and second place with Daniel Neal winning the event with a time of 8.05. His teammate Phillip Bush place second with a time of 8.33 and Jamel Brown of The Citadel placed third with a time of 8.44.
The men’s and women’s 400-meters saw Western Carolina take five of six spots. Thhe Catamounts swept the event with Manteo Mitchell winning with a time of 49.12 followed by his teammates John Oros and Thomas Funderburke. Western Carolina took first and third in the women’s 400-meters as Raquel Ramseur won the race with a time of 56.65. Carla Ballard of Georgia Southern was second with a time of 56.77 and Western Carolina’s Janet Carathers came in third.
The men’s and women’s 60-meters saw the Catamounts sweep the men’s with Manteo Mitchell winning the race with a time of 6.81. Mitchell was followed by teammates Dominique Young and Zeb Johnson. The women’s 60-meter dash featured an exciting finish with first and second place separated by five thousandth of a second. Tangelia Johnson of Western Carolina crossed the finish at 7.562 followed by Georgia Southern’s Demetrise Anthony at 7.567. Ashley McKiver of Appalachian placed third with a time of 7.61.
Western Carolina men’s and women’s team captured five of the six spots in the men’s and women’s 200-meters. The men’s 200-meters was swept by the Catamounts with Manteo Mitchell winning his second race of the championships. Manteo Mitchell’s time was 21.52. Zeb Johnson was second with a time of 21.70 and Dominique Young placed third with a time of 21.99. Raquel Ramseur captured her second first place title of the 2008 Championships with a time of 24.87 in the 200-meters. Janet Carothers came in second with a time of 24.96 and Ashley McKiver of Western Carolina placed third with a time of 25.19.
Brittani Williams of Appalachian State won her second event of the 2008 championships with the weight throw, earning the Field Performer of the Year honor.
The women’s 5,000-meters saw Davidson take the top twp spots with Brenna Burns winning the race with a time of 17:18.56. Her teammate Carolina Sanker came in second with a time of 17:30.01 and UTC’s Kathleen Turchin came in third with a time of 17:51.01.
