Wofford 2, USC Upstate 5

 

Spartanburg, S.C. ? Wofford women’s tennis was handed its first loss of the season Thursday afternoon as they played  host to Spartanburg neighbor USC Upstate, 5-2, at the Reeves Tennis Center.

 

The lone Terriers to claim victories in front of the mixed Wofford and Spartan crowd were sophomore Sabrina Smyers and junior Cayley Wetzig.

 

Smyers playing at the No. 3 singles position defeated Emilia Milovanovic 6-2, 6-4.

 

At the No. 4 slot Wetzig beat Daniela Lovera 7-6, 6-3.

 

“Today was a battle,” said Coach Katie Hangstefer as she commented on the women’s performance. “USC Upstate came ready to play. Wofford fought hard. We played with a lot of intensity and heart. There were some good pressure situations that we learned from and it will be helpful as we approach conference play.”

 

The Terriers will travel to Conway, S.C. Sunday for a noon match against Coastal Carolina.
