Women's Hoops Players Earn Academic Honors

UNCG’s Jasmine Dixon named to Academic All-District Team

 

GREENSBORO, NC ? UNC Greensboro senior forward Jasmine Dixon has been selected to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District women’s basketball team by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

 

The Reston, Va. native was named to the District III second team on the strength of her efforts both in the classroom and on the court. Dixon graduated last May with a 4.0 grade point average with a double major in communications and African American studies. She is currently pursing her master’s degree and boasts a 3.85 grade point average in her graduate coursework.

 

Dixon has seen action in 108 career games and is averaging 4.3 points and 3.5 rebounds for her career. This season she tallied her first career double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds against UNC Asheville setting new career highs in both categories.  The 5-11 forward has scored in double figures five times this season and since being inserted into the starting lineup against Western Carolina in January has averaged 9.4 points and 5.4 rebounds.

 

The Spartans return to the hardwood on Saturday when they welcome SoCon rival, Western Carolina. First tip is set for 3 pm in Fleming Gym. Saturday’s game also marks “Think Pink” Day. UNCG and the Southern Conference in conjunction with the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association have designated all SoCon basketball games on Saturday as “Think Pink” as a part of the national effort to raise awareness of breast cancer treatment, prevention and research.

 

 

Brooke Johnson Named Second Team ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District III

 

CULLOWHEE, N.C. - Western Carolina women's basketball player Brooke Johnson was named to the second team ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District III team as released by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

 

Johnson, a 6-4 junior center from Seymour, Tenn., has a 3.95 GPA majoring in Criminal Justice. It is the first appearance for Johnson on the Academic All-American list and the first Lady Catamount to appear on the list since 2004 when Western Carolina placed Yoneko Allen on the third team. Johnson's second team selection is the highest for a Western Carolina player in school history.

 

Johnson saw action in 11 games this season, averaging 11.9 points per game, prior to her injury against Chattanooga on December 20. She was named Southern Conference Player of the Week and Southern Conference Player of the Month for November and was also voted to the Minnesota Subway Classic and Paradise Classic All-Tournament teams. Johnson has 73 career blocks and is ranked fourth in the Lady Catamount record books.
