SPARTANBURG, S.C. ?The Southern Conference’s track & field coaches selected Dominique Young from Western Carolina and Danielle Thorpe of Appalachian State as the Indoor Track & Field athletes of the month.
Young, a sophomore from Charlotte, N.C., ran a 6.74 in the 60-meter dash at the UNC Joe Hilton Invitational. His time was a NCAA provisional qualifying, a new Western Carolina school record and the top time in the Southern Conference. Young ran a 21.54 in the 200-meters at the East Tennessee State Niswonger Invitational, which is second best in the Southern Conference. He is also a member of the top ranked 4x400 meter relay team.
Thorpe, a sophomore from Durham, N.C., placed second in the long jump at the ASU Invitational in December with a NCAA provisional mark of 20-3.5 and placed second in the triple jump with a mark of 40-7.75. She is currently ranked 16th in the nation at the long jump. At the East Tennessee State Niswonger Invitational, Thorpe was the top collegiate finisher in the triple jump with a mark of 40-11 and placed third in the long jump with a jump of 19-3.25. Thorpe was runner-up in the triple jump at the Penn State Open with a jump of 40-9.75
