BOONE, N.C. - The Appalachian State wrestling team continued their winning ways with a 38-8 victory over Davidson. Appalachian improves to 9-7 (2-1 SoCon) on the season while Davidson falls to 1-9 (0-4 SoCon). The Mountaineers scored three pins and a major decision victory in the win.

Sophomore Frank Cellorrio opened the match at 125-pounds against Ben Altman. Celorrio scored a quick two-point single leg takedown with only fifteen seconds gone. Altman escaped 48 seconds later to take the lead to 2-1. With only a minute remaining in the first period, Altman scored a takedown, followed shortly by a three-point near-fall. The first ended with Celorrio down 6-2. Altman extended his lead to 9-2 in the second thanks an escape and another takedown. Opening the final period in the neutral position, Altman scored another takedown and another three-point near fall . The near fall ended the match at 18-2 with five seconds remainin, scoring the tech. fall.

Senior Terreyl Williams faced Alex Radsky at 133-pounds. In the first minute, Williams claimed two takedowns and allowed Radsky to escape both times. After one period, the score was 4-2. In the second, Williams scored a three-point near fall followed by a takedown to extend his lead to 9-3 after five minutes. Radsky rallied in the final minute to earn a takedown to cut the score to 9-6. Williams escaped and earned a takedown of his own to get the final score of the match to 12-7.

Sophomore Mark Maya made his 2008 dual match debut against Vitaly Radsky in the 141-pound bout. Maya wasted no time earning a takedown with only six seconds off the clock. The wrestlers exchanged takedowns throughout the period ending the first three-minutes at 4-4. Maya trailed 6-7 after five minutes. Early in the third, Maya earned a two-point near-fall. The match ended with a 11-10 Maya victory

Senior Scott Ervin faced Joe Sandercock at 149-pounds. Ervin captured an early two-point takedown and converted the advantage into a pin after only 55 seconds. The pin is Ervin’s sixth of the season and improves his record to 28-5.

Senior Eddie Hutchinson faced Joe McGinley at 157-pounds. Eddie wasted no time, earning a takedown, three-point near-fall then a pin after 31 seconds. The pin is his fifth of the season and second in a row. Hutchinson improves his record to 12-9.

Senior Tommy Hutchinson was matched against Kevin Cook at 165-pounds. Hutchinson ran away with the match, scoring seven points in the first two periods. A stalling penalty against Cook and 5:18 of advantage time gave Hutchinson the 9-0 major decision. The win also gave ASU the 22-5 team match lead.

Senior Neal Martin faced fellow senior Trebor Clavette at 174-pounds. Clavette earned a takedown in the first period to lead 2-0 after three minutes. A Clavette escape and stalling penalty made the score after two-periods 3-1. Martin earned an escape from the bottom position off the whistle to cut the lead to 3-2. Clavette countered with a takedown to make the score 5-2. Martin escaped, but was takendown by Clavette late to win the match 7-3.

Freshman Austin Trotman squared off against junior Sam O’Hair at 184-pounds. Trotman scored a takedown in the first ten-seconds with another coming only 45-seconds from the first period horn. A pair of takedowns of the first minute of the first minute of the second-period pushed Trotman’s lead to 8-3. O’Hair rallied in the final 20-seconds of the second to score a takedown and cut into the Mountaineer lead 8-5 after two periods. Trotman out-scored his opponent 4-1 in the final period to take the final score 12-6.

Freshman Dylan Temple was unopposed as Davidson’s 197-pound wrestler could not make the journey up the mountain. With the forfeit victory, ASU tallied six additional team points extending the ASU lead to 31-8 entering the final match.

Junior Jared Campbell faced Charlie Wolff in the final match of the night, 285-pounds. Campbell earned a takedown early and converted the advantaged position into pin after only 2:04. The victory secured ASU’s second conference victory and ninth overall victory.

Appalachian returns to action on Saturday, Feb. 9 on the road against The Citadel. The battle between the Bulldogs and The Mountaineers gets underway at 2 p.m.

LYNCHBURG, VA ? The UNC Greensboro wrestling squad lost two tough matches on the road on Lynchburg, VA. George Mason snuck past the Spartans in the first match winning, 18-17. UNCG was then downed by the Flames of Liberty, 21-15.

 

UNCG began the evening against the George Mason Patriots. The leaderboard bounced back and forth, but the Patriots were the eventual winner as they squeaked past the Spartans, 18-17.

 

George Mason took an early 6-0 lead in the heavyweight bout as Harry Zander (12-4) won a 49-second fall victory over junior Ryan Hsu (18-10, 4-0 SoCon). Shortly after the whistle, Zander dropped Hsu to his back, Hsu was able to wiggle out, but Zander shouldered him once again for the pin.

 

At 125 pounds, sophomore Mitchell Johnson (10-13, 2-2 SoCon) closed the gap with a decision over Brian Wright (15-8). Johnson led 2-1 through to the third period. Following the final whistle, Johnson was up 4-3, but with riding time, Coughlin tied the score at 4-4. Halfway into the one-minute overtime period, Johnson got in a two-point takedown to win the match 6-4.

 

Eleventh-ranked senior Jeff Hedges (20-9, 4-0 SoCon) tied the scores at six with a 6-3 decision over Joe Coughlin (17-11). The score was tied at 3-3 at the end of the first period and stayed the same going into the third and final round. Hedges scored a quick one-point escape and followed up with a two-point takedown with just over 30 seconds remaining to win the match, 6-3.

 

The Patriots took the lead again with a win in the 141-pound weight class as Will Powars (15-15) won a 7-5 overtime decision over senior Ben Wilmore. Wilmore got on the boards first with a takedown and followed up with another 30 seconds later in the first period. He led, 4-3, moving into the third period, but with a takedown by Powars with less than 10 seconds left, the match went into overtime tied at 5-5. Powars took the 141-pound match with another takedown 30 seconds into the overtime period.

 

The Spartans tied it up once again as junior Marcus Hannah (13-5, 3-1 SoCon) won his fourth match in a row with a 12-6 decision over Brandon Bucher (10-18). Hannah led 5-3 going into the second period and a takedown at the end of the second bumped him to a 7-4 advantage. He held onto the lead to win the match, 12-6.

 

George Mason took the lead again as Frankie McLaughlin (19-6) defeated senior Mark Ring (7-11, 2-1 SoCon). McLaughlin led the match through two with a 4-2 lead going into the third period. He held onto the advantage as he won the match 7-3 and put the Patriots back on top.

 

Redshirt freshman Byron Sigmon (13-11, 3-1 SoCon) gave UNCG the lead once again as he shutout Andrew Rock (8-15) in the 165-pound bout. With a takedown in the first, Sigmon led going in the second period. He landed another takedown and tacked on three with a nearfall to go into the third period up 7-0. He earned three more points in the third to record his first major decision of the season and win the match, 10-0.

 

Once again George Mason took the lead away from UNCG as Randy Oates (22-8) won an 8-4 decision over freshman Mikal McKee (10-15, 1-3 SoCon) in the 165-pound weight class. Oates held a 4-2 advantage, but McKee was able to get in a takedown with less than five seconds left in the second period. The score was tied at 4-4 going into the third, but Oates was able to regain the lead and win the match, 8-4.

 

Sophomore Jeremy Cannon (5-3, 0-0 SoCon) continued to impress in the 184-pound weight class as he won an 8-0 major decision over Bill Widener (14-16). Cannon led 2-0 following period one and upped that score by two moving into the third. He continued to dominate over Widener to come out with the win.

 

It was down to the final match at 197 to decide the victor and for the third time it would have to wait until overtime.

 

This time the victor was not wearing blue and gold as No. 16 Cayle Byers defeated senior, and 17th-ranked, Daren Burns (26-6, 4-0 SoCon). Down 2-1 going into the second period, Burns came up with an early escape and tied it at 2-2. Burns nearly had a takedown with seconds left in the third period, but the buzzer sounded and no points were awarded. Just short of the one minute, overtime mark, Byers caught a hold of Burns’ legs for a takedown to win the match, 4-2.

 

George Mason went on the win the match 18-17. The Patriots moved to 10-4 on the season. UNCG moved into the evening’s final match-up with a record of 8-6, 3-1 SoCon.

 

The Flames took the lead early as Patrick Walker (26-9) defeated junior Ryan Hsu (18-11, 4-0 SoCon) in a 3-1 decision. Both teams were scoreless going into the second period, but Walker took one going into period three. Hsu tacked on an escape, but Walker recorded another escape to take the match, 3-1.

 

The Spartans tied the match at 3-3 with a 13-11 overtime win by sophomore Mitchell Johnson (11-13, 2-2 SoCon) over Sean Katz (14-22). Katz took an early 5-0 lead midway through the first period, but with an escape and a takedown Johnson cut the gap down by three. It was a back and forth battle in period two and with seconds left, Katz broke the 7-7 tie to go into the third period leading 9-7. Tied at 11, Johnson went into his second overtime of the evening and came out once again with a win.

 

At 133 pounds, No. 17 Jeff Hedges (21-9, 4-0 SoCon) battled his way to his tenth consecutive win as he defeated T.J. Mitchell (13-17), with an 8-2 decision. The senior led the match through to the third-round. Up 5-1 with 25 seconds remaining he extended his lead to 7-2 and following the addition of riding time, he took the match 8-2.

 

Senior Ben Wilmore (4-13, 2-2 SoCon) lost a tough battle to Tim Harner (25-10) in the 141-pound bout. Harner led 5-0 going into the second period. Wilmore was able to cut the gap by two, but a takedown late in the third period gave Harner the 10-5 win and tied the teams at 6-6.

 

Junior Marcus Hannah (14-5, 3-1 SoCon) gave UNCG a 9-6 lead with a 3-2 decision over Scott Clymer (15-18). Clymer led the match, 1-0, going into period two following a scoreless first period. Hannah tied the match at 1-1 to start the third period and with 20 seconds left, he shot in for a takedown to take the match, 3-2.

 

Once again the teams found themselves in a tie as Julian Colon (17-15) won a 5-3 decision over senior Mark Ring (7-12, 2-1 SoCon) at 157. Following the opening round, the teams were tied at two. An early escape by Ring gave him a one-point advantage. Colon landed a takedown to take a 4-3 lead in the third period, but with the addition of riding time, he was awarded a 5-3 decision.

 

The Flames took back the lead at 165 as Chad Porter (23-16) defeated redshirt freshman Byron Sigmon (13-11, 3-1 SoCon). Scoreless going into the second period, a late takedown gave Porter the 2-0 lead. Sigmon cut the lead to 2-1, but with a takedown and three quick backpoints, Porter won the match with an 8-1 decision.

 

Liberty upped their lead by six as Aaron Kelley (22-18) won a 1:48 fall victory over freshman Mikal McKee (10-16, 1-3 SoCon).

 

Sophomore Jeremy Cannon dropped a tough 4-1 decision to Chris Daggett in the 184-pound bout. Daggett went into the second period with a 4-0 lead and held on into period three. Cannon was able to tally one point, but it wasn’t enough as Daggett held on for the win.

 

Senior Daren Burns (27-6, 4-0 SoCon) collected his 99th career win and broke the UNCG career win record without having to break a sweat. Burns won the 197-pound bout after Liberty decided their 12-lead was enough to give up the team points.

 

The Flames moved up to 12-9-1 on the season. The Spartans are now 5-7, 3-1 SoCon.

 

UNCG will have to take on NC State on the road before returning home to host Duke for thier final home match of the season. The NC State match on February 13 is set to begin at 7:30pm in Raleigh, NC. The Spartans match against Duke is scheduled to begin at 7pm.
