RICHMOND, Ky. --- The Chattanooga men’s tennis team relied on its depth Friday to defeat Eastern Kentucky 4-2 in a non-conference match.

 

Despite losing at the top two singles positions, the Mocs captured singles wins at No. 3, 4 and 5 and, combined with the doubles point win, pulled out the 4-2 victory.

 

Chattanooga notched victories at the first and third doubles spots to earn the doubles point and a 1-0 lead.  The Colonels, 3-3, tied the score with Alex Das Izquierdo’s 6-1, 6-4 win at No. 1 singles.

 

EKU also scored a win at No. 2 singles, but Pavel Vostrikov secured the team victory with a 7-5, 6-4 win at No. 4 over Johannes John.  Peter Sauska registered a 7-5, 6-2 win over Mel Segota at No. 3, and freshman Robert Diamond earned his first career singles win by defeating Fred Goncalves at No. 6, 6-4, 6-3.

 

The Mocs were scheduled to play Indiana State Friday night and will face Wright State Saturday afternoon.  All three matches are being played at the Greg Adams Indoor Tennis Center near the EKU campus.

RICHMOND, Ky. --- The Chattanooga men’s tennis team won four of six singles matches Saturday to hand Indiana State a 4-2 defeat in Richmond, Ky.

 

The Mocs moved to 3-1 on the year and picked up singles victories in all but the first and sixth positions.  The doubles competition was not played.

 

Senior Razvan Axente scored a 7-6, 6-3 win over Rishi Behl at No. 2 singles, and junior Peter Sauska posted a 6-2, 6-0 win over Jon Sigurdsson at No. 3.

 

Junior Pavel Vostrikov took his match at No. 4 into three sets and defeated Mpiloenhle Migogo, 6-0, 1-6, 6-2.  Freshman Rick van de Bovenkamp was a 6-2, 6-2 winner over Michael Wenham at No. 5.

 

Indiana State picked up its two team points with wins at No. 1 and No. 6 singles.

 

The match was played at the Greg Adams Indoor Tennis Center near the Eastern Kentucky University campus.

 

The Mocs were to play Wright State Saturday night to round out the three-match trip to Kentucky.

College of Charleston 4, Winthrop 3

 

Rock Hill, S.C. -- The College of Charleston men's tennis team handed first-year head coach Jay Bruner his first career win with a hard-fought 4-3 decison over the Eagles.

 

In the men's match, Jimmy Petit's win over Jose Pardo, 7-5, 7-6 (7-4) at No. 6 singles broke at 3-all tie and gave Charleston the victory.  The Cougars claimed the doubles point with wins at No. 2 by Omer Abramovich and Joe Nicolazzi, and at No. 3 from the team of Steven Myers and Petit.

 

Charleston also got victories from Abramovich and Nicolazzi in singles play.  Abramovich defeated Vinicius Bortolatto, 6-4, 6-1 at No. 1, while Nicolazzi cruised to a 6-0, 6-1 win over Marcin Majchrzah at No. 4. The College of Charleston's men's team plays at Presbyterian at 1:00 on Sunday.

Davidson 6, Longwood 1

 

DAVIDSON, N.C. ­ By taking five of the six singles matches to go along with two of the three doubles matches, the Davidson men's tennis team secured its second straight win of the 2008 campaign with a 6-1 home win over Longwood on Saturday afternoon at Knobloch Tennis Center.

 

Davidson ran its record to 2-1, while the Longwood Lancers suffered its fifth loss of the season to drop to 0-5.

 

Senior Phillip Compeau (Wilkesboro, N.C.) and sophomore Eric Noble (Fayetteville, N.C.) scored their first one of the season at No. 1 doubles with an 8-2 win, and sophomore Sam Burns (Banner Elk, N.C.) and freshman Walker Lyons (Wallingford, Pa.) finished off the doubles point with an 8-3 win at No. 2 to give Davidson a 1-0 lead heading into singles play.

 

Seeing their first action as a doubles team was junior Ethan Jaffee (Indianapolis, Ind.) and Carter Braxton (Charlotte, N.C.) at the No. 3 spot.

It was Braxton's first official collegiate match of the season.

 

Jaffee in his first match of the season at No. 1 singles, scored a 7-6, 6-1 win to lead four other Wildcats to two-set singles wins on the afternoon.

Three of the sets went to a tie-breaker, but Davidson earned wins in each one.

 

Recording their first wins of the season in singles play was Burns and freshman Arie Hefter (Birmingham, Ala.) with victories at No. 4 and No. 6.

Burns played one of those tie-breakers, earning a 7-6, 6-4 win over Billy Heird of the Lancers.

 

Hefter earned a 6-2. 6-4 win over Mani Barajas-Alexander to move to 1-1 on the season and earn his first win at No. 6 singles.

 

Junior Scott Myers (West Palm Beach, Fla.) and Lyons capped off the scoring with their second wins on the seasons at No. 5 and 3 singles.

 

Davidson hits the road for a match against nationally ranked South Carolina on Saturday at 2:30 p.m.

Appalachian State 1, South Carolina 6

 

Columbia, S.C.- The Appalachian men’s tennis squad opened its 2008 season on the road against a challenging South Carolina team. The Gamecocks, who came into Saturday’s match previously undefeated, proved to be a little too much for the Mountaineers, defeating ASU 6-1. With the loss, Appalachian moves to 0-1 on the season, while South Carolina improves to 4-0.

Junior transfer Bobby Lake played in his first match for the Black and Gold at the No.1 singles spot. Lake faced a tough competitor in Yevgeny Supeko, as Lake fell 6-1, 7-5. Other Mountaineers faced challenging opponents as well, as senior Ryan Brookshaw battled Diego Cubas at the No. 2 spot, and narrowly lost in two sets, 6-3 and 6-4. Trent Constance, who played a the No.3 spot, could not quite pull off a win, as he was defeated 6-3 and 6-0.

The only Mountaineer that was victorious on the day, was sophomore David Doverspike. Doverspike played Chris Sheehan at the No. 6 position, and defeated him in three sets, winning 6-1, 6-7 and 1-0.

In doubles play, Ryan Brookshaw and Lee Floyd lost at the No.1 spot to Supeko/Cubas, falling 8-3. Constance/Jacobs and Lake/Doverspike also had tough times pulling out wins, as both sets of partners lost, 8-7 and 8-5.

Appalachian will continue with its 2008 campaign on February 9, as the Apps travel to Lyncburg, Va. to face Liberty. The match is set to get underway at 6 p.m.

 

Georgia Southern 1, USC Upstate 6

 

ATLANTA, GA. ? The Georgia Southern men’s tennis team fell, 6-1, Saturday afternoon to USC Upstate at the Bill Moore Tennis Center in Atlanta, Ga. The Eagles fall to 1-2 on the season, while the Spartans improved to 1-1.

 

USC Upstate clinched the doubles point with victories at the two and three seeds. The Eagle duo of Emmanuel Nkoueleue and Borja Malet remained undefeated on the season with an 8-5 defeat over Sandy Franz and Renzo Airaldi at the one spot.

Malet, Gregory Bekkers and Mark Paetz each went into three sets against their opponents in singles action. Malet and Bekkers each took first sets from Airaldi and Javier Tori, 6-4, but fell in the following two sets at the two and three seeds, respectively. Paetz drew his match into a third set after falling in the first and taking the second. Paetz eventually fell to Sebastian Gonzales-Orbegoso in a third set tiebreak, 7-6 (7-5).

 

An upset triumph came from Nkoueleue at the one seed in singles action. Senior Nkoueleue ousted No. 96 Sandy Franz in straight 6-3 sets to provide the Eagles with their lone singles victory of the match. Duoala, Cameroon native, Nkoueleue held his perfect record for the start of the season, standing at 3-0 from the one spot.

“We had a slow start in doubles,” said head coach Justin Miles. “We had some opportunities in singles to change the tide of the match, but we didn’t capitalize on these opportunities. If we took care of those opportunities, the outcome of the match could have changed.”

 

Georgia Southern continues weekend action Sunday at 2 p.m. with a match-up against Georgia Tech. The two teams will face off for the 26th time in school history; the Jackets

College of Charleston 6, Presbyterian 1

 

Clinton, S.C. -- The College of Charleston men's tennis team won five of six singles matches en route to a 6-1 win at Presbyterian in college tennis action on Sunday.

 

With the win the Cougars improved to 2-2 on the season. Charleston plays at Charlotte on Friday, Feb. 15 at 3:00.

 

Omer Abramovich beat Matt Martin 7-6 (7-3), 6-0 at No. 1 singles, Mickael Boyer downed Pat Fediva 6-4, 6-3 at No. 2 singles, Steven Myers defeated Andrew Lee 6-2, 6-4 at No. 3 singles, Chris Carlton bested Mark Cannatelli 6-2, 6-4 at No. 5 and Jimmy Petit claimed a win at No. 6 with a 6-1, 6-0 decision over Brad Luciva.

 

Charleston earned the doubles point when Boyer and Petit won at No. 2 and Myers and Carlton bested Fediva and Adam Herendeen at No.3. Charleston won both matchups 8-5.

 

Furman 3, Alabama 4

 

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. ? #12 Alabama slipped past #65 Furman 4-3 in men’s tennis action today.

 

Alabama took the number one and three doubles matches to earn the first point of the match, while the team of Chris Rhyne and Anrei Chvetsov defeated Saketh Myneni and Andrew Felsenthal 8-7 (7-5) and number two doubles.

 

In singles play, junior Andy Juc defeated #100 Mathieu Thibaudeau 6-4, 6-1 in the number one spot, while Sawyer Duncan topped Houssam Yassine 6-3,

7-5 at number five singles, and Michael Kociecki won over Andrew Felsenthal 6-2, 6-1 at number six.

 

“Although we still have a few things to put together, we were pleased with the team’s performance today,” commented head coach Paul Scarpa. “With Chris Motes not playing today, the other players really stepped up and played well. The team is beginning to play more like the team we expect them to be this season.”

 

With the loss, Furman falls to 0-3 on the season, while Alabama improves to 4-0. The Paladins will host Yale on February 16.

Wofford 5, Mercer 2

 

SPARTANBURG, S.C. ? The Wofford men’s tennis team opened the home season with a 5-2 victory over Mercer University at the Reeves Tennis Center Sunday afternoon.

 

“Today was a good day for us,” said head coach Rod Ray. “Mercer has a good team this year and I thought they did a nice job of battling hard. Without a doubt, we had to give a good effort to win this match. We had a very balanced strong team effort.”

 

In singles action, at the No. 1 position senior Andrew Stubbs remains undefeated in the season as he clinched the win for the Terriers defeating the Bear’s Ivan Besancon 6-4, 6-4.

 

At the No. 2 slot sophomore George Kernodle, the 2007 Southern Conference Freshman of the Year, clinched his first win of the season over Chapman Mitchell 6-0, 6-1.

 

Junior Scott Collins walked away victorious with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Mercer’s Fernando Armendaris.

 

Also collecting his first win of the season, freshman Paul Bartholomy competed at the No. 6 position and defeated Matthew Davis in a 3-6, 6-2, 6-2 come-from-behind victory.

 

As the Terriers clinched the doubles point, the duo of Collins and freshman Christopher Williams walked away with their first doubles win of the season.
