Curry and Anderson Lead January Athletes of the Month

SPARTANBURG, S.C. ? The Southern Conference announced today the Athletes of the Month for December.  One athlete is chosen from each sport: men’s and women’s basketball men’s and women’s tennis and wrestling.

 

Men’s Basketball

Davidson’s Stephen Curry averaged 24.2 points, five rebounds, two assists and two steals in 10 games played.  Curry shot 48 percent from the field and 39 percent from behind the arc.  In January, Curry scored over 14 points in each game with highs of 34 against Wofford and 37 against Chattanooga.  Twenty-seven of his 37 points against Chattanooga came in the second half.  He was one shy of a Davidson school record which was set by Fred Hetzel twice in 1964.  Curry was named the Southern Conference player of the week for January 28 and earned a spot on the mid-season top-30 list for the Wooden Award.

 

Women’s Basketball

Chattanooga’s Alex Anderson averaged 18.6 points, 9.5 rebounds and 2.6 blocks in January.  Anderson had 13 or more points in all eight games she played, shooting 54.7 percent from the field and 74.4 percent from the charity strip.  She recorded double-doubles against Appalachian State, Wofford, College of Charleston and Georgia Southern.  Anderson had 25 points, 11 rebounds and shot 66 percent from the field against Appalachian State, and tallied 24 points, 16 rebounds on 52 percent shooting against Wofford.

 

Wrestling

UNC Greensboro’s Jeff Hedges was undefeated in the month of January, with an 18-9 overall record and 4-0 in the Southern Conference.  Hedges defeated Davidson’s Alex Radsky 10-2 in a major decision and followed that performance by defeating No.10 Eric Albright from Virginia in a fall at the 2:29 mark.  He then topped American’s Matt Mariacher 8-2 in a decision before shutting down Gardner-Webb’s Matthew Featherston 17-0 in a tech fall.  Hedges is ranked No. 17 by Intermat/NWCA/USA Today’s individual poll.

 

Men’s Tennis

Elon’s Philip Nemec had a 3-2 record in the month of January, defeating No.16 Alex Stone from Duke and No. 21 Andrew Mazlin from Michigan.  In doubles action, Nemec and his teammate Podlewski defeated Duke’s Dylan Arnould and Stone.

 

Women’s Tennis

Anna Milian, a sophomore at Elon, is an all-around team player for the Elon women’s tennis team.  Milian has a 2-2 singles record with one win as No.1 singles and one win at No.2 singles.  She has a 2-2 record in doubles also with one win at No.1 doubles and one win at No.2 doubles
